The Boston, Massachusetts Freedom Trail is a mostly brick path leading to multiple historical sites within the city. This list includes all of the 16 stops along the trail, and includes various significant buildings, churches, public squares, cemeteries and memorials.The total distance covered by the trail is about 2 and a half miles, from Boston Common to the nearby Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown. Much of the walk leads directly through Downtown Boston, making it an ideal tourist destination for anyone interested in the nation's history or looking for an excuse to walk through the City of Boston. Along the trail, markers note the significance of various stops and give a bit of context and background to the importance of the site. Aaron A. Sargent

Aaron Augustus Sargent (September 28, 1827 – August 14, 1887) was an American journalist, lawyer, politician and diplomat. In 1878, Sargent historically introduced what would later become the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving women the right to vote. He was sometimes called the "Senator for the Southern Pacific Railroad".



Aaron Hobart

Aaron Hobart (June 26, 1787 – September 19, 1858) was a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts.   Born in Abington, Massachusetts, Hobart pursued classical studies and graduated from Brown University in 1805.  He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Abington.  He served as member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and served in the Massachusetts State Senate.
Hobart was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Sixteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Zabdiel Sampson.  He was reelected as a Democratic-Republican to the Seventeenth Congress, elected as an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth Congress, and reelected as an Adams candidate to the Nineteenth Congress, and served from November 24, 1820, to March 3, 1827.
He declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1826.  He then served as an Executive councilor 1827-1831 and served as probate judge 1843-1858.  He died in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, September 19, 1858, and was interred in Central Cemetery.

Abbott Lawrence (December 16, 1792, Groton, Massachusetts – August 18, 1855) was a prominent American businessman, politician, and philanthropist. He founded Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Abel Carter Wilder (March 18, 1828 – December 22, 1875) was a U.S. Representative from Kansas.

Abiel Foster

Abiel Foster (August 8, 1735 – February 6, 1806) was an American clergyman and politician from Canterbury, Province of New Hampshire. He represented New Hampshire in the Continental Congress and the U.S. Congress.

Abijah Bigelow

Abijah Bigelow (December 5, 1775 – April 5, 1860) was a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts.
Born in Westminster, Massachusetts, the son of Elisha and Sarah (Goodridge) Bigelow, Abijah Bigelow studied at Leicester (Massachusetts) Academy and New Ipswich Academy at New Ipswich, New Hampshire.  He graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, in 1795.  He studied law in Groton, Massachusetts.
He was admitted to the Worcester County bar in 1798 and commenced practice in Leominster, Massachusetts, in the same year.  He was town clerk of Leominster 1803-1809.
He served as member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives 1807-1809.  He was a Justice of the Peace 1809-1860 and justice of the quorum 1812-1860.
Bigelow was elected as a Federalist to the Eleventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William Stedman.  He was reelected to the Twelfth and Thirteenth Congresses and served from October 8, 1810, to March 3, 1815.  He viewed the War of 1812 in a decidedly negative light.
Bigelow moved to Worcester in 1817, and served as clerk of the courts of Worcester County 1817-1833.  He resumed the practice of law, and served as trustee of Leicester Academy in 1819-1820 and as treasurer 1820-1853.  He was appointed a master in chancery in 1838.  He died in Worcester, Massachusetts, April 5, 1860, and was interred in the Rural Cemetery.
Bigelow was elected a member of the American Antiquarian Society in 1813, and subsequently served on its board of councilors from 1817-1828.  The Antiquarian Society also holds a collection of manuscripts generated by Abijah and his extended family from 1785-1883.  His correspondence with his wife Hannah Gardner Bigelow (1780–1857) while he was a congressman was also published in 1930 in volume 40 of the Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, with the title "The Letters of Abijah Bigelow, Member of Congress, to his Wife, 1810-1815."Abijah and his wife Hannah had nine children, seven of whom survived their father.  Hannah Bigelow's brother Francis was also a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts.

Abraham Edwards (September 7, 1796 – February 5, 1870) was a Massachusetts politician who served as the fifth Mayor of Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Adam Schiff

Adam Bennett Schiff (born June 22, 1960) is an American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for California's 28th congressional district since 2001. He is a member of the Democratic Party.
Schiff's district, numbered as the 27th from 2001 to 2003 and as the 29th from 2003 and 2013, has always been centered in the San Gabriel Valley east of Los Angeles, including Pasadena, Glendale and his hometown of Burbank. For his first six terms, he represented a district included the areas of Alhambra, Altadena, San Gabriel, Burbank, Glendale, South Pasadena, Temple City, Monterey Park, and Pasadena. In 2010, his district's boundaries were re-drawn to include, among others, La Cañada Flintridge and La Crescenta-Montrose as well as large slices of Los Angeles itself including Sunland-Tujunga, Hollywood, the Hollywood Hills, West Hollywood, Echo Park, Silver Lake, and Los Feliz.
Schiff is an influential voice for the Democratic Party on foreign policy and national security issues in the House of Representatives. He currently serves as the chairman of the United States House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. He is currently on leave from the House Appropriations Committee which he joined in 2007. He previously served on the United States House Foreign Affairs Committee and the State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs Subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee.

Addison G. Foster

Addison Gardner Foster (January 28, 1837 – January 16, 1917) was a United States Senator from Washington.
He attended the common schools and moved to Wabasha County, Minnesota where he engaged in the grain and real estate business. He was auditor and surveyor of Wabasha County; he then moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1873 where he engaged in the lumber business. He moved to Tacoma, Washington in 1888 and continued in the lumber business, and also engaged in coal mine operations and railroad construction.
Foster was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate and served from March 4, 1899, to March 4, 1905. He did not run for reelection. While in the Senate, he was chairman of the Committee on Coast and Insular Survey (Fifty-sixth and Fifty-seventh Congresses) and a member of the Committee on Geological Survey (Fifty-eighth Congress).
He resumed the lumber business at Tacoma, and in 1914 retired from active business pursuits and resided in Tacoma until his death in 1917. He was buried in Tacoma Cemetery.

Albert Cole

Albert Cole (December 28, 1904 – November 1966) was a Massachusetts politician who served in the Massachusetts State Senate and as the 40th and 42nd mayors of Lynn, Massachusetts.
Cole was a Lynn Councillor-at-large from 1932 to 1935 and a member of the Massachusetts Senate from the 1st Essex Senatorial District from 1935 to 1940. Cole was elected Mayor of Lynn in 1939. He stepped down in 1943 to serve with the United States Army in World War II, he was succeeded in the last six months of his term by Councilor-at-large Arthur J. Frawley. He was elected mayor again in 1945 while still serving in the Pacific. During his second tenure as mayor, Cole arranged for the construction of Lynn Memorial City Hall and Auditorium.  He did not run for reelection in 1947 and instead supported the campaign of city councilor Stuart A. Tarr.Cole was a candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts in 1946, but lost the Republican nomination to Arthur W. Coolidge.In 1953, Cole was nominated by President Dwight Eisenhower for the position of Controller of Customs in Boston.

Albert Elmer Austin (November 15, 1877 – January 26, 1942) was a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from 1939 to 1941 and member of the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1917 to 1919 and from 1921 to 1923. He was the stepfather of Clare Boothe Luce.

Albert Smith

Albert Smith (January 3, 1793 – May 29, 1867) was a U.S. Representative from Maine.
Born in Hanover, Massachusetts, Smith attended the common schools and was graduated from Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, in 1813.  He studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced practice in Portland, Maine, in 1817.  He served as member of the Maine House of Representatives in 1820.  He was United States Marshal for the district of Maine 1830-1838.
Smith was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1839 – March 3, 1841).  He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1840 to the Twenty-seventh Congress.  He died in Boston, Massachusetts, on May 29, 1867.  He was interred in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Alexander Bullock

Alexander Hamilton Bullock (March 2, 1816 – January 17, 1882) was an American lawyer, politician, and businessman from Massachusetts.  First a Whig and then a Republican, he served three terms (1866–69) as the 26th Governor of Massachusetts.  He was actively opposed to the expansion of slavery before the American Civil War, playing a major role in the New England Emigrant Aid Society, founded in 1855 to settle the Kansas Territory with abolitionists.  He was for many years involved in the insurance industry in Worcester, where he also served one term as mayor.
Bullock was educated as a lawyer, and married into the wealthy Hazard family of arms manufacturers, becoming one the state's wealthiest men.  He served in the state legislature during the war, and was active in recruiting for the war effort.  He was an advocate of temperance, and of the expansion of railroads in the state.

Alexander De Witt

Alexander De Witt (April 2, 1798 – January 13, 1879) was a 19th-century American politician from the state of Massachusetts.
Born in New Braintree, Massachusetts, De Witt worked in textile manufacturing in Oxford, Massachusetts. Active in politics as a Democrat, he was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1830, serving until 1836. He served in the Massachusetts State Senate in 1842, 1844, 1850, and 1851.An anti-slavery activist, De Witt later joined the Free Soil Party.  As a Free Soiler he was elected to the United States Congress in 1853. In January 1854, he was one of six signatories of the "Appeal of the Independent Democrats", drafted to oppose the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
After the demise of the Free Soil Party, De Witt joined the American Party, then the only major party with an anti-slavery platform.  He won a second term in 1854, and served in the 34th Congress.He was defeated in his 1856 bid for reelection and returned to his previous work as a textile manufacturer.  De Witt later became a Republican, and supported the Union during the American Civil War by participating in efforts to recruit and equip soldiers for Massachusetts regiments.
De Witt died in Oxford on January 13, 1879. He is buried in Oxford's South Cemetery.

Alexander H. Rice

Alexander Hamilton Rice (August 30, 1818 – July 22, 1895) was an American politician and businessman from Massachusetts.  He served as Mayor of Boston from 1856 to 1857, a U.S. Congressman during the American Civil War, and as the 30th Governor of Massachusetts from 1876–78.  He was part owner and president of Rice-Kendall, one of the nation's largest paper products distributors.
Educated at Union College, Rice was for many years involved in the paper business, and entered Boston politics in 1853.  As mayor, he helped broker an agreement that began development of its Back Bay area.  His Congressional service included the introduction of the failed Crittenden Compromise, oversight of naval affairs during the Civil War, and resistance to Radical Republican actions.  As governor, he promoted social reform legislation and reductions in working hours.

Alexis Caswell (January 29, 1799 – January 8, 1877) was an American educator, born in Taunton, Massachusetts. He graduated Brown University in 1822, and entered the Baptist ministry.

Alice S. Langtry (June 29, 1932 – May 1, 2017) was a former Republican member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Langtry died in Barrington, Illinois on May 1, 2017, aged 84.

Allan R. McKinnon

Allan Robert McKinnon is a former Massachusetts politician who served as a member of the Massachusetts State Senate from 1971 to 1985, Deputy Secretary of Transportation from 1985 to 1988, and Chairman of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority from 1988 to 1996. He retired in 1996.
He was raised by his Mother, Sue (Farrar) McKinnon, in Weymouth, the youngest of 9 children. His father, Joseph McKinnon, died when he was 8 years old in 1938. He resided in Weymouth throughout his career with his wife, Anne (McLaughlin) McKinnon (1933–2001). He has four children; Kerin (1959-), Kevin (1964–2010), Sean (1967-) and Megan (1972-).
After graduating from Tufts in 1955, McKinnon taught history and government in Weymouth and Holbrook, Massachusetts. He served as Weymouth's Public Works Commissioner from 1958 to 1963 and was a member of the town's Board of Assessors from 1963 to 1975.McKinnon was the State Senator from the Norfolk and Plymouth District from 1971 to 1985. While serving in the senate he continued teaching American History in the evenings at Quincy Junior College. He was known as a political opponent of Senate President William M. Bulger, an opponent of the death penalty, and a supporter of forced busing in Boston. McKinnon decided not to run for reelection in 1984 and was appointed Deputy Secretary of Transportation.In 1987 he was appointed by Governor Michael Dukakis to serve as Chairman of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority. As Turnpike Chairman, he oversaw repairs to the Callahan and Sumner tunnels, increased the amount of Jersey barriers on state highways, and established highway litter patrols and wildflower programs. During his tenure, Massachusetts had the fewest fatalities on major turnpikes in the United States.

Allen Hobbs

Allen Hobbs (30 July 1899 – 23 November 1960) was a captain in the United States Navy. He was assigned as the 32nd Governor of American Samoa from 8 February 1944 to 27 January 1945. In 1948, he was appointed as the Hydographer of the Navy, serving until 1953, when he retired.
