James Monroe was the fifth President of the United States. Monroe was the last president who was a Founding Father of the United States and the last president from the Virginia dynasty and the Republican Generation. He was of French and Scottish descent. Born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, Monroe was of the planter class and fought in the American Revolutionary War. He was wounded in the Battle of Trenton with a musket ball to his shoulder. After studying law under Thomas Jefferson from 1780 to 1783, he served as a delegate in the Continental Congress. David S. Jackson


David Sherwood Jackson was a U.S. Representative from New York. Born in New York City in 1813, Jackson grew up attending public schools. He served as an alderman in the common council of New York City from 1843 to 1846, while engaging in various business pursuits. Jackson served as a Democratic Member-elect to the 30th Congress from March 4, 1847 until April 19, 1848. At this time, the House declared the seat vacant because the election was contested. Jackson then resumed his former business pursuits. He again served as an alderman in the common council in 1856 and 1857.
