David Ortiz was shot at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic on June 9, 2019, according to his father, Leo Ortiz. The bullet reportedly entered through David Ortiz's back and exited through his abdomen. His father told reporters that he was out of surgery just after midnight and in stable condition.
The Boston Red Sox legend's assistant, Leo Lopez, told ESPN that during the six-hour surgery, doctors removed part of Ortiz's intestines, colon, and gallbladder. He reportedly also suffered liver damage, though doctors say he is "out of danger."
