Liviu Librescu was a Romanian-born Israeli scientist and engineer. He was a professor whose major research fields were aeroelasticity and aerodynamics. A prominent academic in addition to being a survivor of the Holocaust, he is most widely known for his actions during the Virginia Tech shootings, in which he held off the gunman, giving all but one of his students enough time to escape through the windows. Shot and killed during the attack, Librescu was posthumously awarded the Order of the Star of Romania, Romania's highest civilian honor. Grigore Constantin Moisil was a Romanian mathematician, computer pioneer, and member of the Romanian Academy. His research was mainly in the fields of mathematical logic, algebraic logic, MV-algebra, and differential equations. He is viewed as the father of computer science in Romania. Moisil was also a member of the Academy of Sciences of Bologna and of the International Institute of Philosophy. Ion Iliescu is a Romanian politician and statesman, who served as President of Romania from 1989 until 1996, and from 2000 until 2004. From 1996 to 2000 and from 2004 until his retirement in 2008, Iliescu was a senator for the Social Democratic Party, whose honorary president he remains. He joined the Communist Party in 1953 and became a member of its Central Committee in 1965, however beginning with 1971 he was gradually marginalized by Nicolae Ceaușescu. Dan Mircea Geoană is a Romanian politician, who served as president of the upper chamber of the Romanian Parliament, the Senate from December 20, 2008 until he was revoked by the senators on November 23, 2011. From 21 April 2005 until 21 February 2010 he was the head of the Partidul Social Democrat, one of Romania's largest parties. He was the candidate of the party for the position of President of Romania in the 2009 presidential election.
