Jail can weigh on the soul of even the most hardened criminals. Perhaps that's why these famous prisoners ended up committing suicide. Many of these notable prisoners who killed themselves were behind bars for murder; others were notorious war criminals.

Who numbers among these famous prison suicides? Dr. Harold Shipman was found guilty of over a dozen murders in 2000. He had administered lethal doses of pain medication to his patients, and then falsified their records to reflect "old age" as the cause of death. Shipman used bed sheets to hang himself in his cell in 2004 at the age of 57. In 2017, NFL player Aaron Hernandez committed suicide by hanging while serving out his murder sentence at Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center.

War criminal and Nazi Rudolf Hess was convicted of crimes against humanity for his part in the Holocaust. In 1987, at the age of 93, he hanged himself with an extension cord - though some people suspect that his death may have been a murder. Other famous prisoners who committed suicide include Ariel Castro, Lynn Turner, and Philip Markoff.
