The Second City is a improv based sketch comedy organization that was started in Chicago in 1959, expanded to Toronto in 1973 and now has a theatre in Los Angeles. The Second City hosts performances and classes and it has been the training ground for many of the entertainment industries' funniest individuals.

Who is the most famous Second City member? Veteran comedian Joan Rivers tops our list. The opinionated, comic best known for her stand up routines spent some time in 1961 performing on The Second City main stage. Other funny ladies who started their comedy careers at Second City include Kristen Wiig, Tina Fey and Catherine O'Hara.

“Saturday Night Live” found many of their featured players at The Second City. The late, great “Animal House” star John Belushi got his start at The Second City as did Dan Akroyd, Chris Farley and Mike Meyers.
