He is also Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore. He previously served as the Minister for Education from 2003 to 2008. He has been a Member of Parliament representing the Jurong Group Representation Constituency since 2001. In March 2011, Tharman was appointed the Chairman of the International Monetary and Financial Committee, the policy steering committee of the International Monetary Fund. He was drafted by the New York Giants of the National Football League in the fourth round of the 1999 NFL Draft. He played college football for the Evansville Purple Aces, Illinois Fighting Illini and Northwestern Wildcats. Bennett began his collegiate career as a baseball and football player at the University of Illinois, but transferred to the University of Evansville after one year.
