It can be difficult to make history seem relevant to young students. For those below the college level that aren't majoring in the subject, history is often the dry recitation of facts and dates, with little to anchor that information to the modern day. Photographs can bring this dry subject to life, but not every historical photo is shown in school.
The following are historical photos not in history books. Some reveal the terrible toll of major conflicts, some show celebrities uniting for civil rights, and others, like New York's now defunct Luna Park, simply show the beauty of electric light at the turn of the 20th century. Vote up the ones that give history a new perspective.

Rachel Parsons Working On A Steam Turbine (c. 1914-1918)
These images belong to the Parsons’ "Women Laborers" photograph album, taken at Parsons’ Works on Shields Road during the First World War.
The factory was founded by engineer Charles Parsons, best known for his invention of the steam turbine. In 1914, with the outbreak of war, Parsons’ daughter Rachel, one of the first three women to study engineering at Cambridge, replaced her brother on the board of directors, and took on a role in the training department of the Ministry of Munitions, supporting the increasing amount of women taking on jobs in industry to support the war effort.
