Universal dropped the trailer Wednesday for F9, the latest entry in the Fast & Furious series, and it’s a lot.
There’s family, of course, always a key component of the franchise. But, there are also flying cars, stealth bombers, apparently a trip to space — and magnets! The crew is a long way from the first film, which focused on a group of street racers who used their skills to pull off elaborate heists.
Showing a bit of self-awareness, Tyrese Gibson’s character even takes a few seconds in the new trailer to point out just how crazy the group’s schemes have gotten, noting, “We’ve taken out planes, trains, tanks. I’m not even gonna think about the submarine.”
The gang has grown over the years and lost some members, most tragically Paul Walker’s Brian after Walker died in a car accident, and Vin Diesel’s Dom, Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty, and Jordana Brewster’s Mia are the only returning cast members who appeared in the first film of the franchise.
However, longtime viewers will be happy to see the returns of Roman (Gibson), Tej (Ludacris), and internet favorite Han (Sung Kang), who returns to the series after fans demanded #JusticeForHan in a successful Twitter campaign.
Joining Charlize Theron as the main villain in the film, John Cena makes his first appearance in the franchise, apparently playing Dom’s long-lost brother. The twist brings The Fast Saga, as always, back to family.
The new film is set to hit theaters June 25.
