One guy got into a car accident and was sh*tfaced. He was on the hood of the car and preparing to jump off it. The paramedics told him not to move, but he jumped anyway. His neck was fractured in the accident. He jumped anyway and became an instant quadriplegic.

I once had to take a call from a woman whose father accidentally backed over her 3-year-old son in his truck. The worst part was knowing that there was nothing that could be done. Obviously you can't say that. You still have to do everything possible.

That means talking her through CPR while she holds pieces of his skull together. He passed at the scene.

My instructor shocked a conscious lady one time. She was in v fib or something and had her eyes open and looking around. They were using a Lucas device as well, and when he shocked her, he said she rolled on the cot like an alligator and tore out her IV and whatnot.

My instructor said she then sat up and started screaming. They got her to the ED where she was still screaming. He said she coded again and they worked her in the hallway and when they got her going again she sat up and said "don't ever shock me again." My instructor said it was one of the most surreal things he's ever seen.

A family of five that burned in their SUV. They were traveling down the interstate when a vehicle going the opposite direction crossed the median [and T-boned] them, which smashed them into the car that was on their right side as they were passing.

This caused their vehicle to [become engulfed] in flames. No way out except the back hatch, as their left doors were crushed from the guy who crossed the median and their right side crushed from the car they were trying to pass. Driver (dad) died on impact... and mom from smoke inhalation. Would have most likely lived had she been able to get out. Oldest daughter and youngest daughter were found in the hatch area of the SUV, with the oldest daughter's hand on the release. Both daughters passed from smoke inhalation. Mom was found as if she had just aided in getting youngest daughter in the hatch area of the SUV. Son sitting up front suffered smoke inhalation, but most likely would have perished from the force of the crash.

This may not be the most SCREWED up thing I have had to deal with, but it is for sure the most traumatizing thing that I hopefully never have to see again.

I was really messed up for a while after that.

This family was on their way to the local university to see their son that they hadn't seen in a few months. They were 2 miles from their exit. I volunteered to go with the chaplin and give the notice.

This kid lost his whole family in a split second. He said that the last thing he said to his mom was "Don't come down here, none of my friend's family visits them and you will just embarrass me." He was devastated. After all these years I still keep in constant contact with him and he is practically another son to our family.

Folks, your life or family’s life can be over in... a second. No matter the fight etc., always let them know you love them. Hug them, kiss them, and embrace them. I have seen it too much. You just never know when that might be the last time you see them or they see you. Don't take them for granted.

EMT here. I've brought people back to life; I've dealt with massive traumas, etc. The most f*cked up sh*t (this is gonna be literal) that I've dealt with was a call to the home of a raging alcoholic. I show up in my personal vehicle after police and the ambulance are on scene for a dehydrated male. I walk in and see people holding their noses as they walk into the bedroom. I figured they were exaggerating until I walked in. This dude hadn't left the bedroom for days, he was just in there drunk. He had sh*t on the floor, on the bed, and somehow on the walls. There was some sh*t on the tile of the bathroom that was attached to the bedroom; it had a knife next to it like he was trying to chip off the dried up poop. He had poop in his pants and had vomited and pissed all over the place and himself.

That was the day that I had learned to put Vicks VapoRub on my top lip to mask bad odors. In this field, you really learn what alcohol can do to people, which sucks because you often need a drink at the end of a shift. F*ckin poop, man.

I once had to resuscitate a guy who'd had a heart attack while getting ready for bed. The walls of his bedroom were covered with pictures of him molesting little kids.
