16 Foods That Aren't What You Thought You Ordered

They say don't judge a book by its cover; in some cases, you can't judge a food by its name. There are some foods that aren't what you think - at all. If you're over-confident in your menu interpreting abilities, or if you're just too embarrassed to ask the server what a certain food is, you could end up with a dish that is not what you wanted at all. To make matters worse, foods with the confusing names are usually gross foods — like someone did that on purpose to try to trick you into eating it.

This list is full of weird foods with misleading names. Now, if you ever see any of these on a menu at restaurant, you'll actually know what you're getting.

  • Sweetbreads

    What It Sounds Like: A sweet loaf of bread.
    What It Really Is: The thymus or pancreas of a calf, lamb, cow or pig.
    Fun Fact: Some people think they're called "sweet" because this organ meat is more sweet than savory. Not that that makes them any less strange.
  • Eskimo Ice Cream

    What It Sounds Like: Ice cream that's extra cold and creamy.
    What It Really Is: A concoction of reindeer fat or seal oil, snow, berries, and sometimes ground fish.
    Fun Fact: This dish is traditionally made after the first catch of a polar bear or seal.
  • Black Pudding

    What It Sounds Like: An extremely chocolatey chocolate pudding.
    What It Actually Is: Sausage made with coagulated blood.
    Fun Fact: Some claim it's a "superfood" because it's high in potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron.
  • Rocky Mountain Oysters

    What It Sounds Like: A delicious seafood.
    What It Really Is: Bull, pig, or sheep testicles.
    Fun Fact: The first ranchers to settle in the Rocky Mountain region started eating these because they didn't want to waste any part of an animal.
  • Head Cheese

    What It Sounds Like: The best cheese ever!
    What It Really Is: Meat jelly made with calf or pig's head.
    Fun Fact: The meat holds together without adding any gelatin, because gelatin itself is made from boiling animal bones - a natural part of the head cheese making process.
  • What It Sounds Like: A type of fish.
    What It Really Is: A developing bird embryo.
    Fun Fact: It's considered a delicacy in the Philippines, but a lot of Filipinos can't even stomach it.
