Using a bit of the present and the past, photographer Frank Machalowski creates ghostly photography that looks like the real deal. Unlike Victorian ghost photography, Machalowski's ghost pictures never pretend to be authentic depictions of ghosts. Machalowski's ghost photography, where the photographer combined old vintage film portraits with his own pictures, thrives on the contrast between the two pictures. Frank Machalowski ghost photographs place the subject in focus amid a hazy, colorless world, forcing the viewer to consider the subject. The portraits in question were purchased from a French vendor, never before developed and therefore never before seen. The subject, be it a person, an animal, or structure, commands the picture with a supernatural awareness, as if the subjects themselves too realize they would be seen all these years later.

In a way, ghost photography by Machalowski resembles the process of Victorian death photography. Both customs preserve the dead in photos, given each in very different ways. But in Machalowski's work, he gives these dead subjects a whole new life, one that nobody, least of all them, expected.
