From their movies to their interviews, actors of both drama and comedy brought some much-needed laughter to our year. Beloved screen legends like Betty White were remembered for cheeky comebacks, while blockbuster actors like Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Lawrence made us chuckle through their retelling of early-in-their career embarrassments.
From stunts gone terribly awry to school pranks to poorly timed flatulence, we hope these stories keep you laughing merrily into 2023.
Burt Reynolds was known for his make-no-apologies and don't-mess-with-me attitude. He proved he was a man of action and not just words when he went head-to-head with the National Enquirer, a tabloid magazine he said had been "writing crap about [him] for years."
In a messy act of revenge, he decided to give the tabloid crap in return - literally. According to Reynolds, he carried out the plot on the company's Florida headquarters on Christmas Eve:
I had about 100 horses at the time, and that’s a lot of horse sh*t. I got two huge nets and I filled them both. And about 3:00 in the morning, my ranch foreman took my helicopter down to the wonderful National Enquirer, which is just down the street here from me...
I just didn’t think it was right that they had the largest Christmas tree in the entire United States. It wasn’t right. So, I dumped it on top of the tree, and it just cascaded down. It was a beautiful sight.
Reynolds told The Guardian that the act made him feel "great."

Both Kyra Sedgwick (Born on the Fourth of July) and Kevin Bacon (A Few Good Men) have co-starred with Tom Cruise in films. They must have gotten along well enough with Cruise during the filming of those projects, as the couple was invited to the star's house for dinner and a screening of A Few Good Men.
As Sedgwick recalled during a 2021 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, her curiosity led to police interrupting the party:
I was pregnant, I was very pregnant, and we got invited over to dinner. We got invited over for dinner with lots of famous people like Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, because she was in [A Few Good Men]... It was one of those nights that I often don't get invited to... There was this, like, fireplace mantle, and I was looking around and there was this little button underneath the mantel. I was like, “Oh what is that little button?” So I pressed the little button because I thought maybe something interesting will happen. Nothing happened and then I got a little nervous...
[When she told Cruise what she had done], He goes, “That's the panic button,” And so the cops came, they had to stop the screening, they had to see Tom. I think there were more than like five cop cars, it was something...
The actor laughingly admitted that she has never been invited back to Cruise's home.
Meanwhile, during his own appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Bacon said he had talked to Cruise about Sedgwick's behavior at the party:
I just apologized. “Oh honey, she’s so crazy. There she goes again pressing buttons.”
Though Ryan Reynolds is an established leading man who was dubbed People Magazine's “Sexiest Man Alive" in 2010, it wasn't always that way. During a 2017 appearance on Conan, the actor claimed he had absolutely no game when it came to impressing his female classmates at school:
I remember, it took me a while to learn that you could actually talk to girls. I remember during elementary school, I used to “accidentally fall” on [girls] during volleyball practice. And just a few years later, that's illegal. That's straight up inappropriate.
Not knowing how to talk to girls was only one of young Reynolds's problems. During a 2012 appearance on BBC Two's Top Gear, he talked about following in his brothers' footsteps of getting into trouble with school administrators:
I was a bit of a pariah at school. I have three older brothers, all of whom were kicked out of this very same school, so from the moment I got there, I was a marked man. I was kicked out for something I think you'd appreciate. I was kicked out for stealing a car. But wait - I didn't actually steal a vehicle! …
A teacher that we had, who was just 100% awful, he had this little car. It was one of those little Volkswagens. So my friends and I just played an April Fool's prank on him - we picked it up, we lifted it up and carried it down the block. There was about eight of us… In Canada, if you move it more than 10 feet, it's a felony. I didn't know that. One city block was 100% grand theft!
Aimee Carrero was a cast member of the Freeform sitcom Young & Hungry, which Betty White appeared on in 2017. Carrero remembered on Twitter the first thing the actress said to her:
“Nice wedding ring. When I was young, if you wanted to f*ck a guy you had to marry him. So I was married three times.”
RIP Betty, you gave us everything.
