15 Epic Games Like 'Ghost of Tsushima'

Updated October 19, 2020 73 votes 13 voters15 items

Ghost of Tsushima is a new entry into the world of games set in feudal Japan, and with its open-world environment, it offers more of Japan than any other game of its kind. The game is set around Jin Sakai, one of the last remaining samurai on Tsushima Island during the Mongol invasion of Japan during the 1270s. The game is an action-adventure stealth dealing primarily with a stealth mechanic in a third-person perspective, and the world of Ghost of Tsushima is absolutely beautiful.

Ghost of Tsushima isn't the first game of its kind, though it is likely the most ambitious. That said, there have been some exceptional games like Ghost of Tsushima that are also set in various periods within Japan's rich cultural history (as well as games that feature similar gameplay theme but are set in entirely different worlds — both real in fictional). Whatever your gaming interests, if you like Ghost of Tsushima, you're going to also enjoy these amazing games.

Check out the list below, and if you see a game you've played that's similar to Ghost of Tsushima, be sure to vote it up so other wondering Ronin readers can see which titles to check out next.

  • Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was released in early 2019 on PC, Xbox One, and the PS4. The game follows a shinobi warrior who is on a quest for vengeance on a clan of samurai who attacked him and kidnapped his lord. The game has many common elements seen in Ghost Of Tsushima, as both titles rely heavily on stealth, exploration, and combat.

While both games are set in Japan, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is less grounded in historical accuracy as Ghost Of Tsushima due to numerous fictional representations of Japan during the Sengoku period (1467-1615). It's also often cited as one of the most difficult games to ever grace the PS4

  • Nioh 2 is listed (or ranked) 2 on the list 15 Epic Games Like 'Ghost of Tsushima'
    Photo: Team Ninja

Nioh 2 is an action role-playing game set in the late 16th century, where players develop a character named Hide, a half-yōkai known as "Shiftling." Hide's journey begins when he befriends Kinoshita Tōkichirō. The game takes place immediately after the events of the first game, which concluded following the Siege of Osaka.

There are numerous elements of the Nioh series that share commonalities with Ghost Of Tsushima. That said, Nioh's heavy reliance on mysticism and the use of yōkai spirit set the two apart. Still, both games are set within the same base theme, though Nioh 2 definitely sways further into the world of magic and monsters through the many yōkai variations players must defeat throughout the game.

  • Code Vein was released in late-2019 on all the major systems as an open-world action role-playing game. The game is set in a dystopian apocalypse and is played in a third-person perspective. The world fell apart during a strange calamity known as the Great Collapse, and the only way to fight the monsters popping up all over the world is to reanimate the dead to become Revenants: humans brought back to life with a Biological Organ Regenerative parasite, which gives them unique abilities.

Code Vein is set long after the feudal period of Japan, but it does follow a similar theme and fighting style reminiscent of ninjas. The majority of gameplay was inspired by the Dark Souls series, and the look of the game was inspired by God Eater 3, both of which were released by Bandai Namco. It's one of those games you will enjoy if you're all about playing open-world adventures, and while there are plenty of aspects that aren't similar to Ghost Of Tsushima, enough is there in the mechanics and story that players of both series are sure to enjoy.

    Onimusha (Series)

Onimusha (Series) is listed (or ranked) 4 on the list 15 Epic Games Like 'Ghost of Tsushima'
    Photo: Capcom

The Onimusha game franchise has released seven titles with one remaster, and it is one of the more popular games of its genre. In Onimusha, players take control of a character who wields the power of the Oni, which makes it possible for them to fight the Genma, the primary enemies in the series. The games are set around real historical figures who helped shape Japan's history, though they are shown to possess or use supernatural powers to accomplish their goals.

Onimusha titles rely heavily on melee combat, and players can control their character through literal hordes of enemies. There's a lot of hacking and slashing, but there is a storyline to follow as well. The first game was remastered in HD and rereleased as Onimusha: Warlords in 2019 on all the major consoles and the PC, so it's possible to dive back into the world of Onimusha once more.
