Is there any other film series that brings fans more joy, anger, sadness, and confusion than the Ghostbusters franchise? The 1984 debut of Peter Venkman and company is heralded as one of the funniest movies of all time, and it's one of the best movies of the ‘80s. But the films following the original have brought along vitriol and bewilderment.
Bust-Heads have been working out fan theories for how each film connects since 1989, along with the idea that everyone has passed on in Ghostbusters 2. As cuckoo as that sounds, the facts behind the theory are fairly solid. But that’s not the only Ghostbusters fan theory that holds up. While these fans may not be afraid of ghosts, they are afraid of reboots and sequels, which is why there are so many fan theories trying to make sense of the series.
Crossing The Streams Wipes Out Gozer's Dimension
Ghostbusters fans know that when you're using a proton pack, the one no-no is crossing the streams. That's what the guys have to do to stop the demon Gozer though. According to Egon, crossing the streams will wipe out life as we know it, but that doesn't happen at the end of the movie. Or does it?
Redditor/u/u/b25mitch thinks the crossing of the streams eliminates Gozer's dimension instead of ours. They write:
Egon describes the effects of crossing the streams early in the movie. 'Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body [splitting] at the speed of light.' That sounds like a pretty [perilous] event, and there's no real reason that Egon's prediction should be wrong. It just occurred on the other side of the portal.56649Is this a plausible theory?
The Guys End Up In Vigo's Painting Because They're Connected To It
At the end of Ghostbusters II, after the guys defeat Vigo and save Dana's son, their visages end up in the portrait, erasing Vigo. This turn of events has confused viewers for years, but Redditor/u/TheCitizen616 may have an explanation:
It's left unexplained why Vigo's painting became a painting of Oscar and the four Ghostbusters at the end.
My theory? Part of the spell Vigo the Carpathian used to trap his soul in the painting also magically created a self-portrait of its subject not only based on their looks but also their emotional state. The paint of Vigo looks evil and menacing because those were the dominant emotions of Vigo's soul.
When Vigo tried to inhabit Oscar, Oscar became connected to that spell. That's why, when Vigo was expelled from the painting, it then became a painting of Oscar. And because Oscar was grateful to the four men who had just saved him for the big scary man, it included the Ghostbusters looking over him and keeping him safe.46147Is this a plausible theory?
The Ghosts Are Locking Louis Out Of His Apartment
A minor detail in Ghostbusters is how Louis is continually getting locked out of his apartment. This doesn't seem to have anything to do with the haunting.
Louis and Dana live in an apartment building that has been [intimidated] by spiritual activity for years, although Louis seems to never have any problems. Dana obviously has many experiences that manifest themselves in several different ways, while they leave Louis alone until he becomes possessed. My theory is that the ghosts are responsible for constantly locking Louis out of his apartment.42065Is this a plausible theory?
The Ghostbusters Have Been Forgotten In 'Ghostbusters' 2020
No one knows much about Jason Reitman's upcoming Ghostbusters reboot/sequel, but after a teaser was posted in January 2019, the internet offered up conjecture about the film. Online theorists believe the Ghostbusters are no longer around and that someone is trying to bring them back, which is why they're working on a proton pack in a barn along with the Ecto 1.
They also believe the new film's going to have an Evil Dead vibe because of the way the teaser is shot, but that is yet to be seen.26981Is this a plausible theory?
