Welcome to Middle-earthLooking closer at the Lord of the Rings trilogy books and movies, The Hobbit, and everything else in J. R. R. Tolkien's beloved universe.
Vote up the most impressive details you missed the first time around.
Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings is one of the most outstanding achievements in cinematic history. The story of how a young Hobbit is thrust into the affairs of Middle-earth at significant personal cost is arguably one of the best stories ever told, and Jackson's take on Tolkien's source material is unmatched. A lot of what makes The Lord of the Rings so compelling is the assortment of main characters who aid Frodo on his journey.
While there are plenty of amazing characters that deserve a second, third, or thousandth look, one of the best has got to be Gimli, son of Glóin. His portrayal by John Rhys-Davies is one of the best aspects of the trilogy, and a lot of time and attention to detail was taken to ensure he matched up with the books. To that end, a ton of detail was added that most viewers likely missed.
Fortunately, some fans have watched and re-watched the trilogy countless times over the years. When they do, some fans notice a small but clever detail about the trilogy they hadn't seen before. Occasionally, a fan will post their finding to the Movie Details subreddit for all to see.
