Back before Netflix, before streaming, even before DVDs, there were VHS rental stores. Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, and dozens of mom n' pop shops littered neighborhoods with their promises of fun and adventure through their selection of hundreds of films and a three-movie rental limit.
In an effort to nab the attention of lost would-be renters (or buyers) who wandered the aisles and wondered how to spend their Saturday night, distributors would think outside the VHS box with strange, funny, and scary covers to represent the movies inside. In the early '90s, dozens of gimmick boxes littered the aisles of local rental shops in hopes of snagging your attention. Here are a few of the standouts.
