It used to be that the Golden Globes was a fairly accurate indicator for the Oscars. More and more, that’s not true as the two awards show giants seem to have broken up. But even beyond this parting of ways, there have been best actors that didn’t win a Golden Globes, best films that didn’t win Golden Globes, and simply no love in the form of a statue for Betty White. Many of these offensive Golden Golden Globe snubs are maddening enough to make us want to storm the bar over at the Beverly Hilton and shake some sense into someone. And then clap Ricky Gervais on the back for all of those mean (but true) barbs.
The biggest Golden Globe snubs feel personal, but it just may the Hollywood Foreign Press Association really thought Bugsy was a much better film than Silence of the Lambs (which was nominated, but lost). Or that Sissy Spacek was forgettable in Carrie or that True Grit wasn't such a great movie after all.
Maybe the HFPA watches films and TV shows through a thick cigarette haze and international whimsy Americans just don’t get. And then there are the strangest Golden Globe snubs. The Coen brothers’ True Grit wasn’t even given a fine how do you do as one one of the best movies that didn’t win Golden Globes. But surely it was better than Black Swan? Surely.
