Few Game of Thrones episodes have been as consequential as "The Long Night," AKA the Battle of Winterfell, as a victor was finally declared in the long-brewing war between the living and the dead. It was one of the most highly anticipated episodes in the show's history, and its consequences rippled all the way to the end of the saga three episodes later. The dust has since settled, so it's worthwhile to reflect back on the dark, decisive battle to see how some of the best Game of Thrones characters fared against the White Walkers. A massive cast of GoT favorites showed up in the Battle of Winterfell, but only one can hold the title of MVP. Who was most integral to protecting Winterfell? Who played the biggest role in the ultimate victory against death itself? And which Game of Thrones deaths will be remembered among the series' all-time best?

  • Arya Stark1

Arya saved not only her brother from the Night King, but everyone else left standing at Winterfell - and beyond. She did what not even dragonfire could do. BAMF status secured.

  • Jorah Mormont2

He fought to his very last breath in order to defend his queen, Dany. He did everything he could to stay by her side over the course of the series, and now he can finally rest.

  • Lyanna Mormont3

    Lyanna Mormont

The fan-favorite Lyanna Mormont met her end at the hands of an undead giant. But she also managed to take down that very giant in her dying moments.

  • Theon Greyjoy4

RIP Theon. Before sacrificing himself to defend Bran, the one-time ruler of Winterfell led the Ironborn in wiping out a sizable horde of undead soldiers.

  • Beric Dondarrion5

The Lord of Light brought him back time and again for a reason, and that purpose was served when he saved Arya's life during the battle.

  • Drogon6

Drogon not only blasted the undead with fire, he also shook off a horde of wights all by himself before comforting Dany as she mourned Jorah's sacrifice.

  • Unsullied Army7

    Unsullied Army

The Unsullied, under Grey Worm's command, gave their lives defending the main gate of Winterfell.

  • Rhaegal8

Serving as Jon/Aegon's steed, Rhaegal helped to ground his undead brother Viserion.

  • Grey Worm9

    Grey Worm

As leader of the Unsullied, Grey Worm had to make tough calls and watch his soldiers fall at the hands of the dead. He never backed down, though, and helped defend the exterior of Winterfell as long as he could.

  • Tormund Giantsbane10

    Tormund Giantsbane

He howled, growled, chopped, and he made it out alive.

  • Sandor Clegane11

Despite having a severe anxiety attack at the sheer volume of fire on display, the Hound stepped up to help rescue Arya from a horde of wights.

  • Melisandre12

A last-minute addition to the forces of humanity, Melisandre used her magic and wisdom one last time to help protect Winterfell. Her firepower helped slow down the Night King's army and allow the last of the Unsullied and Northerners to retreat inside the castle.

  • Jaime Lannister13

The Kingslayer hasn't fought this hard in a while, maybe ever. He helped save Brienne and Samwell's lives while fighting with his less dominant hand.

  • Brienne of Tarth14

Newly knighted Brienne never wavered in the face of the undead forces. She lead the way and was integral in keeping the Night King's forces at bay.

  • Gendry15

While we saw little of Gendry fighting, he was integral to the efforts after crafting the dragonglass weapons that helped the living battle the dead. His efforts were essential to the overall defense.

  • Jon Snow16

Also known as Aegon Targaryen, Snow fought hard for his northern brethren, even if he ended the battle yelling at an ice dragon instead of actually taking the fight to the Night King.

  • Dolorous Edd17

    Dolorous Edd

His watch came to an end after saving Samwell Tarly in the early stages of the battle.

  • Podrick Payne18

    Podrick Payne

Podrick was there, and he fought hard, especially while defending his mentor Brienne.

  • Daenerys Targaryen19

Along with her personal favorite dragon Drogon, everyone's favorite Khaleesi did some serious damage to the undead army. Unseated from her steed, however, Dany still proved fairly effective with a sword fighting alongside Jorah at the end of the battle.

  • Dothraki Army20

    Dothraki Army

They were the frontline of the battle, and they all perished valiantly.

  • Bran Stark21

Bran used his powers to warg into a flock of ravens for a little bit, letting us see what the Night King was up to. That counts for something.

  • Davos Seaworth22

Despite his suboptimal fighting abilities, Davos made his way to the end of the battle. He didn't have a signature moment in combat, but he did choose not to execute Melisandre, though, which proved fruitful.

  • Samwell Tarly23

Despite clearly wanting to turn tail and run from the danger, Sam never gave up. He faced death several times throughout the episode, but made it out alive.

  • Tyrion Lannister24

Everyone's favorite quick-witted drunkard couldn't do much to help the fight above the crypts, even though he really wanted to. He did eventually wade into the fighting after the undead emerged from the crypts.

  • Missandei25

Missandei told Sansa and Tyrion what's what, reminding them that if it weren't for Dany, they'd be dead already.
