The Best Cincinnati Reds of All Time
This is a list of the greatest Cincinnati Reds in team history. Formed in 1869, the CIncinnati Reds are America's oldest professional sports franchise. The Reds have won nine National League pennants and five World Series championships in its history, with the last being in 1990. Throughout its history, the Reds have featured some of the strongest lineups and best hitters in baseball history. Cincinnati players have won 12 MVP awards and surprisingly, zero Cy Youngs, even though pitcher Bucky Walters won the MVP in 1939. Twelve Cincinnati Reds players are in the Hall of Fame wearing Reds caps.
The 1970s were a dominant decade for the Reds. Nicknamed the Big Red Machine, the Reds were led by one of the bestand most renowned lineups in baseball history. Between 1970-1977, Reds players won six National League MVP awards.Joe Morgan (1975, 1976) and Johnny Bench (1970, 1972) took home two a piece and Pete Rose (1973) and George Foster (1977) as the other winners. This run of MVP winners showcases how impressive those Reds teams were. the team won five National League Western Division titles, four National League pennants, and two World Series titles.The team's combined record from 1970-1976 was 683 wins and 443 losses, an average of nearly 98 wins per season.
More recently, the Reds have experienced a renaissance in the same vein of those championship squads. Already, Joey Votto, the National League MVP winner in 2010 and second baseman Brandon Phillips have established themselves as two of the greatest infielders in the team's history. With a young foundation and a stellar group of pitchers, these Reds look to channel the success of the 1970s.
