Spoiler Warning: Plot points and spoilers from Gunpowder Milkshake to follow.
Gunpowder Milkshake is one of those movies that asks what would happen if John Wick had a dad - and they were both women.
But while much of the plot and the whole "assassin underworld as an elite club" vibe draws many parallels to the John Wick franchise, this Netflix original carves out its own identity as a stylistic actioner that asks you to suspend pretty much all disbelief and just enjoy the dark humor, over-the-top action sequences and plenty of slo-mo goodness.
And to be sure, Gunpowder Milkshake offers up plenty of WTF moments worth mentioning, as young hit woman Sam (Karen Gillan) outwits and outguns her mobster foils, eventually teaming up with her long-lost mom (Lena Heady) to protect an orphaned girl (Chloe Coleman), and you know... slaughter even more mobster dudes who don't seem to understand the power of pissed off gals on a mission.

Sam Casually Sewing Herself Up While Watching TV
The bizarre psychopathy of this movie reveals itself early on, with Sam finishing up a job in which she kills several henchmen and then casually arrives home to eat cereal and watch TV.
When she notices blood on her sleeve, she realizes she has a gash in her arm. So she shrugs and proceeds to sew herself up, alternating scoops of cereal with a stitch here and there.
No anesthesia. No biggie.
And this is less than two minutes into the movie.Shook the shake?
The Library... of Guns
In perhaps one of the biggest parallels to the John Wick franchise, assassins can visit a special library where books are filled with guns. There's a Children's section. An even an Enchanted Forest.
Yes, it's twisted and weird - and when the three homicidal librarians who run it are Carla Gugino, Angela Bassett and Michelle Yeoh, it's pretty clear that this library will at some point be the setting of some cinematic bloodletting.
And, of course, that's definitely a thing that happens in an insane Third Act gunfight that by that point in the movie seems completely believable and appropriate.Shook the shake?
'Close Your Eyes, Baby Girl'
It's truly disturbing when a movie actually shows someone cutting into a child's face. But at least here, mom shows up almost immediately to dispatch maternal justice upon the perp and several of his evil buddies.
Her only instruction to a young Sam (Freya Allan)? "Close your eyes, baby girl."
As the sound of screams and gunfire surrounds her, Sam obediently keeps her eyes shut until it's all over. Considering that Sam grows up to be an assassin, we're guessing momma's attempt to avoid scarring her for life was largely unsuccessful.
Then again, Sam's just carrying on the family business.Shook the shake?
The Secret Hospital
Once again, we're definitely getting John Wick vibes here.
But when Sam accidentally shoots a guy who was only trying to save his daughter from kidnappers, she has a sudden bout of conscience and takes her injured victim to a secret hospital for criminals.
The creepy doctor who runs the place and has a penchant for laughing gas is only the beginning.
Soon, it's the scene of utter mayhem with various gangsters she put in the place decide to go after her. It's a darkly comical moment, heightened by the fact that the creepy doc manages to render her arms useless with an injection, forcing her to use nothing but centrifugal force in aiming her weapon.
It's hard to explain how weird and graphically devious the scene is, but it goes on and on. She bites off a guy's ear. She kills someone with a giant tooth sculpture. You have to watch it to understand.Shook the shake?
