Guy Fawkes masks first entered pop culture when they were used as a symbol of protest in the 2006 film adaptation of the graphic novel V for Vendetta. With their sharp features, narrow eyes, and pointed beard, they're an exaggerated visage of the face of Guy Fawkes, the ringleader of the November 5, 1605 Gunpowder Plot.

While a couple of protests used them in 2006 (protests against V for Vendetta, ironically), they were used in a large scale protest in 2008, when the group Anonymous donned them for a rally against Scientology in London, to prevent Scientology members from photographing them. They were later worn for Occupy protests in major cities, anti-Internet censorship protests in Europe, Arab Spring uprisings, and smaller protests around the world. As a response, many nations, including Arab countries and Canada, banned the masks - only making their use increase.

Here are photos of Guy Fawkes masks being used in protests against big business, censorship, and government crackdowns.
