A Timeline Of The Relationship Between Gypsy Rose Blanchard And Nick Godejohn

Updated April 25, 2019 15.2k views13 items

In a shocking criminal case that inspired both the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest and Hulu's The Act, Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, killed Gypsy's mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Authorities now believe Dee Dee may have suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental health issue in which a caregiver - often a mother - invents or even causes an illness for a person under their care. Dee Dee had convinced friends, family, doctors, and even herself that Gypsy was wheelchair-bound and suffered from muscular dystrophy, leukemia, and developmental problems, among other ailments. Dee Dee even lied to Gypsy about the girl's true age, claiming she was several years younger than she actually was.

When Godejohn and Gypsy met on a Christian dating site in 2012, their secret blossomed into a full-fledged online relationship. After years of suffering at the hands of her abusive mother, however, Gyspy wanted a way out. In order to escape her mother's tyranny and live "happily ever after" with Godejohn, Gypsy developed a plan to end her mother's life. In June 2015, the couple carried out their scheme, fatally stabbing Dee Dee Blanchard in her bed.

Despite this brutality - or perhaps because of it - the public became fascinated with the unorthodox romance between Gypsy and Godejohn. Below is a timeline detailing the most noteworthy events in their unconventional and tragic "love story."

  • 2012: Gypsy Rose Blanchard And Nick Godejohn Meet On A Christian Dating Site

In 2012, Gypsy Rose Blanchard met Nick Godejohn on the Christian dating site ChristianDatingForFree.com. Gypsy's mother, Dee Dee, prohibited her daughter from using their computer without supervision, limiting Gypsy's online communication with Godejohn to late nights when Dee Dee was asleep.

  • 2013: Gypsy Reveals Her Mother's Deception To Godejohn

After dating online for a year, Gypsy revealed to Godejohn that she didn't actually need her wheelchair, and that her mother was forcing her to feign her numerous ailments. Though Godejohn urged Gypsy to seek help, she claimed she had already attempted to contact police once, but failed.

As Dee Dee and Gypsy were well-known, respected members of their small community in Springfield, MO, Gypsy doubted authorities would believe her allegations against her mother.

  • 2013: Gypsy And Godejohn Begin A BDSM Relationship

Eventually, Gypsy and Godejohn's online relationship escalated to include BDSM and sexualized roleplay. Godejohn introduced Gypsy to the BDSM lifestyle as a means for her to find personal liberation from her mother's control - and to fulfill his own desires. Gypsy created numerous characters, such as "Ruby" and "Candy," to satisfy Godejohn's so-called "evil side."

Gypsy told Dr. Phil in 2017, "[Godejohn] had multiple personalities that were [aggressive] and scary... He thought he was a 500-year-old vampire named Victor."

Of their initial relationship, Godejohn told ABC News, "I truly believed that [Gypsy] was, like, my soulmate."

  • March 2013: Godejohn Is Arrested For Watching Adult Movies At A McDonald's

Godejohn was convicted of disorderly conduct in 2013 after he was caught watching adult movies and touching himself at a McDonald's in Waukesha, WI. He was also carrying a large folding knife, though the concealed weapon charge was dismissed.
