The Harry Potter series redefined children's publishing when it hit the market in 1997. Created by J.K. Rowling, the series follows the adventures of a young boy named Harry Potter who discovers that he's a wizard. While the series has many elements, Rowling insists that the books are mainly about death. Which makes sense: the Harry Potter books can be truly bleak at times.
There are many, many tragic fates in the Harry Potter series. The forces of good and evil are in conflict for the entirety of the series, which leads to some harsh Harry Potter character ends.
Many Harry Potter demises vary in method and the impact on the overall story. Some characters were finished off in combat. Others were tormented by dark magic, and many passed tragically. The hardest ones to handle were fan-favorite characters, which resulted in broken hearts around the world.

From Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:
Harry had a clear view of the bodies lying next to Fred: Remus and Tonks, pale and still and peaceful-looking, apparently asleep beneath the dark, enchanted ceiling.Gut punch?

Although Snape was intimidating on the outside, he was good at his core. Snape took out Dumbledore to earn the trust of Lord Voldemort, and following Dumbledore's end, Snape devoted his life to protecting the students of Hogwarts.
During the Square off against of Hogwarts, Lord Voldemort had his snake/horcrux/best friend Nagini eliminate Snape because he suspected he was the true holder of the Elder Wand. In his final moments, Snape revealed to Harry how much he loved his mother.Gut punch?

Dumbledore was the Headmaster of Hogwarts, where he was considered by his peers to be the most powerful wizard of all time. He was the only wizard that Voldemort truly feared.
Dumbledore was slain by Severus Snape in the Astronomy Tower. Dumbledore actually ordered Snape to do it so that Voldemort would trust him, thus allowing Snape to work as a double agent.Gut punch?
