The Harry Potter series really knows how to bum its fans out. On top of the sad moments – like character deaths – that everyone knows, there are moments that the author snuck into the story subtly or revealed on Pottermore that will make upsetting moments or deaths even worse for fans.
One Gryffindor Was Named After A Dying Fan
From Redditor u/Aderyn_Sly:
Natalie McDonald, a first-year student in Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, was a real person. She was a nine-year-old girl from Toronto, Canada, who was dying of leukemia who wrote to JK asking what was going to happen in the next Harry Potter book because she would not live long enough to read it. By the time that JK emailed back, Natalie had passed away the day before, never having a chance to read it. In tribute, she wrote her in as a first-year student at Hogwarts who was sorted into Gryffindor House by the Sorting Hat.Even sadder?
George Couldn't Produce A Patronus After Fred's Death
From Redditor u/SerArysOakheart:
After Fred's death, George could never produce a patronus.

Lupin's Life Was One Tragedy After Another
From Redditor u/MrJHazer:
Lupin's life. In a society where he's already ostracized for being a werewolf, he ends up meeting three people who seem to accept him.
Years into adulthood, two of his friends "die' and another is sent to Azkaban for supposedly being involved in both murders, leaving Lupin alone for the next 12 years.Even sadder?
Harry And Hedwig Take A Final Tour Of Privet Drive Right Before Hedwig Is Killed
From Redditor u/hurdlelocker:
It's part of the larger event of Harry leaving Privet Drive at the beginning of Deathly Hallows but I always cry a lot when Harry is giving Hedwig a final tour of Number 4, especially when he shows her the cupboard under the stairs.Even sadder?
