Dark Details Fans Noticed About Supporting Characters In Disney Movies

Tragedy often befalls our favorite Disney heroes. Sometimes it's central to the plot, like Ariel losing her voice, but in other cases, it's much more minuscule, like when Mother Gothel tells Rapunzel's hair she loves it (but not Rapunzel) in Tangled. The main characters aren't the only ones who experience hardships, though. Many supporting characters in Disney films go through plenty of turmoil, too! For example, in Encanto, look closely and you'll catch Dolores-- who has hyper-sensitive hearing-- covering her ears in pain when the whole family applauds. Chi-Fu from Mulan is a constant thorn in the titular hero's side, but it's actually darker than it seems. Given the time period, Chi-Fu was likely operating on a set of Confucian principles that expressly discount women. There are even sad details in the backstory. If you scan Nani's bedroom in Lilo & Stitch, you can find a shelf full of surfing honors, signifying a life she had to leave behind to care for her younger sister!

In Disney's The Lion King (1994), Zazu rhetorically asks Scar 'didn't your mother ever tell you not to play with your food?' Later on, directly after Mufasa's death, Scar passes up his chance to kill Simba by essentially 'playing with his food.' In the end, this leads to his demise.
