Fans of the Potterverse are well aware that the Malfoys are evil. Over the course of eight big-screen installments, Harry's nemeses plot nefarious schemes at almost every turn. If you look a little closer, though, it's apparent that the Malfoy family goes through some pretty heartbreaking stuff. That doesn't make their actions just, but it at least adds some context. For example, after Lucius returns to Hogwarts in Deathly Hallows - Part 2 he has a tattoo of his Azkaban prison number on his neck. At the end of the same film, the reason Voldemort believes Harry is dead is because of Narcissa. Of course, some of these details are just heartbreakingly sinister. In Chamber of Secrets, before it's revealed how deadly the Avada Kedavra spell is, Lucius tries to use it on Harry in the hallways of Hogwarts.

The hug that Voldemort gave to Draco, in Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011), was entirely improvised. Hence the awkwardness from both actors.

Lucius Forgets He Has A Broken Wand In 'Deathly Hallows - Part 1'
All of a wizard's power lies with his wand. In a way, it represents his manhood. Voldemort takes away this power/manhood from Lucius, and I think his snapping it is a way to humiliate him further.

Draco Gets Bitten By A Cane In 'Chamber Of Secrets'
In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Lucius Malfoy slaps Draco's hand onto his cane. Jason Isaacs didn't know there were small fangs on the top, so Tom Felton's pain was genuine

Harry Doesn't Realize Lucius Is Trying To Kill Him In 'Chamber Of Secrets'
In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Lucius Malfoy attempts to cast Avada Kedavra on Harry after being tricked into freeing Dobby. It hasn't yet been explained in the movies that this spell instantly kills a person. Lucius was literally about to murder Harry in the middle of Hogwarts.

The Malfoys Aren't On Speaking Terms In 'Deathly Hallows - Part 2'
In Deathly Hallows, when Voldemort announced HP is dead, everybody laughs except the Malfoy's. Lucius only nods, but starts scanning for his son. Narcissa doesn't, because Harry told her Draco lives. They aren't talking to each other. This is right before the scene of them leaving separately.

Narcissa Receives A Permanent Scar In 'Half-Blood Prince'
