While Roe v. Wade made abortion legal nationwide in 1973, the practice remains regulated by state governments. Across the United States, there are some areas without easy access to clinics that provide abortions. A 2018 study performed by the Journal of Medical Internet Research concluded that the residents of 27 large US cities, all with populations over 50,000, live over 100 miles from a facility that provides abortions. Researchers labeled these cities “abortion deserts.” An estimated three million people live in these areas.

More restrictive laws in many states mean the number of abortion clinic locations are dwindling due to waiting periods, limited appointments, and lack of access to necessary supplies. As a result, many women in these areas have to travel to another state to get an abortion. Statistics from the study revealed that 90 percent of US counties do not have an abortion clinic and six states only have one clinic. Texas had a large number of abortion deserts: the state includes 10 cities over 100 miles from an abortion facility. Pro-choice advocates generally believe that residents of abortion deserts have the right to access to abortion services as well as the low cost healthcare and other services provided by many clinics. Pro-life advocates generally view the more restrictive laws positively, as they view terminating a pregnancy as morally wrong.

Regardless of your personal thoughts on the issue of abortion, this list provides information on the nearest clinics in the nation's biggest abortion deserts. As the pro-life versus pro-choice debate is likely to continue for the foreseeable future, it's important to know the facts and understand the type of services abortion clinics provide.
