During Hollywood's infancy, films gave no credits to actors; audiences had no way of naming their preferred performers - but this soon changed: by the 1910s, Hollywood was in the business of creating stars, men and women alike, whom audiences admired and adored. The biggest stars usually commanded the largest salaries. Typically, the highest-paid actors and actresses could attract huge audiences to movie theaters.
