Slughorn's Introduction Hints At How Powerful He Is

    From Redditor u/Few_Bookkeeper_9920:

During his first scene on page he is hiding from Dumbledore and Harry as an armchair. Whilst this is played off as whimsical and quite humorous, the actual talent here is unbelievable. Transfiguration is regarded by many to be the most difficult form of magic taught at Hogwarts, and full human transfiguration spells are insanely difficult. There are only a handful of individuals in the series who have pulled off such magic so successfully.

The Slughorns Are Part Of The Sacred 28

    From Redditor u/ibid-119623:

[Rowling said] The Slughorn family is one of the so-called ‘Sacred Twenty-Eight,’ (a select list of the only families designated ‘pure-blooded’ by an anonymous author in the 1930s) and while Slughorn’s parents were never militant in their pure-blood beliefs, they encouraged a quiet belief in the family’s innate superiority.

Slughorn's Actions During The Battle Of Hogwarts Erased Some Stigma Against Slytherin

    From Redditor u/ibid-11962:

[Rowling said] When his bravery at the Battle of Hogwarts was publicized, his actions (along with those of Regulus Black, which gained attention in the aftermath of Voldemort’s demise) removed much of the stigma that had been attached to Slytherin house for hundreds of years past. Though now (permanently) retired, his portrait has a place of honor in the Slytherin common room.

He Is One Of The Few People Voldemort Admired

    From Redditor u/Few_Bookkeeper_9920:

He is also one of the VERY few people who Voldemort himself admired and respected for their power and knowledge. Riddle only ever demonstrates any acknowledgement towards others skills towards Dumbledore, Snape and Bellatrix, arguably three of the most powerful wizards in the series after Voldemort himself. The other is Slughorn, a man who he repeatedly attempted to recruit to the Death Eaters in hope that he would benefit in his war.
