Most people have an at least cursory knowledge of the Bible, but how much do you really know of the book? One of the most influential works of all time, the Bible is looked to for inspiration and spiritual guidance, but there is a darker side many people tend to overlook - or just don't know about. The side with all the horrific Bible stories that give even horror master Stephen King a run for his money.

The violence in the Bible knows no bounds; one can't help but read these stories and think, “man, that would make a great horror movie.” We are, after all, talking about the fate of humanity and the battle between Heaven and Hell for the souls of mankind. It's bound to get intense.

Ezekiel and His Army of Undead Bones

Raising bones from the dead is a no-brainer for horror film fodder. In this story, God drops off Ezekiel in the middle of a large valley that is filled with bones. Then God tells Ezekiel to do something that would test anyone's faith and sanity: speak to the bones and tell them to come back to life.

"I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin. Then you will know I am the Lord."

Ezekiel, the good believer spoke to the bones. Sure enough, they started moving, re-growing muscle and tendons until finally, they were back on their feet. God tells them to breathe, which they of course do - he is God after all, and just like that, as the Bible puts it, "[Ezekiel] had a vast army."

A Levite and His Concubine

Okay, so this one is especially gruesome. The story goes a Levite took for himself a concubine who wasn't faithful to him, so she returned to her home. After a few days, he went after her to beg her to come back. The girl's father convinced them to stay a few days, then a few days more until finally, the Levite decided that they had waited long enough and that it was time to go. So he headed out toward Jerusalem.

So on their journey, it began to get dark and the master advised  they stop and rest however the nearest city wasn't good enough because he did not want to stay in any city where the people were not Israelites so they passed it up and went to the next city.

Now this is where it gets weird. While staying at someone's house a group of villagers show up, surround the house and basically yell at the host to send out the man so they can rape him!  Being a good host he goes outside and convinces the villagers what an awful idea this is and negotiated instead to send out his own virgin daughter and the Levites concubine in exchange for the mans safety.

So the daughter and concubine were sent out where they were raped and beaten by these villagers and left there until morning. So when the Levite walked outside the next morning  he told her to get up, when she didn't respond he put her on his donkey and headed home.

"When he reached home, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel."

King Herod Eaten Alive By Worms

Following the pattern of Biblical death scene's this one takes the Oscar for creativity. King Herod was delivering a speech to his people. He was telling them of all of the good that had been done recently when they began to praise him for the accomplishments. Herod being the arrogant man that he was, took the praise for himself and never corrected his people nor gave the glory to God as commanded.

It was then that the Bible says

"Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died."

You can't have a list of horrific Bible stories without a few on demon possession, and I bet this one was a sight to behold! So the story goes Jesus was getting out of a boat when a man with an unclean spirit approached him from the tombs where the guy lived! He immediately ran up to Jesus and begged Jesus not to torture him. So Jesus being the kind soul that he was asked the man his name. This is when the demon that was inside of him answered trying to bargain with Jesus saying

“My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”  And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.

“Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.”  He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. "

Needless to say, those tending to the pigs, as well as the man that was freed from his demons went and told everyone what happened.
