Updated January 10, 2020 6.4k views13 items

If things in your life don't feel right, or if you're experiencing wave after wave of bad luck, some would say you may be cursed. Curses are largely considered a thing of the past, but quite a few modern spiritual movements subscribe to the practice. As such, it's important to know the types of curses and how to break them.

If you conclude that you have, in fact, been cursed, the next thing to know is how to break a hex. Can you remove curses with prayer? Can generational curses be broken? These are the kinds of questions targets of magic-induced misfortune often ask, and the remedies below may help such folks rid themselves of the villainous vibes ruining their good time.

Use A Magic Mirror To Reveal The One Who Cursed You

Using a magic mirror will supposedly allow you to send the bad mojo cast upon you back to whoever is responsible. Patti Wigington explains how to turn a normal, everyday mirror into a magical one:

First, consecrate the mirror like you would any other of your magical tools. Place the mirror, standing up, in a bowl of black salt, which is used in many hoodoo traditions to provide protection and repel negativity.

Once the mirror is in place, use an object or photo that represents the person who cursed you. According to Wigington, the curse will return to whoever casted it.

DeAwnah, a folk magic practitioner from Georgia, believes in the power of the magic mirror. "I use mirrors a lot," she said in an interview about her practices. "It comes in handy to break curses and hexes, especially if I'm not exactly sure who the source is. It bounces everything back to the person who originally cast it."

  • Perform An Uncrossing Spell

Wigington digs into the history of various types of folk magic, including one long-standing means of dealing with curses: uncrossing spells. According to her:

An "uncrossing" spell is performed and often involves the recitation of the 37th Psalm. If you don’t feel comfortable saying a Psalm during spellwork, you can burn uncrossing incense, which is typically a blend of rue, hyssop, salt, sage, and frankincense.

Use A Decoy Doll To Take The Brunt Of The Curse For You

Puppets and dolls are common tools in magic, and can allegedly serve as a personal defense against curses. Wigington describes the steps involved in creating a decoy puppet, or "poppet":

Create a poppet to represent yourself - or whoever the victim of the curse is - and charge the poppet with the task of taking on the damage in your place. This is actually pretty simple because the poppet acts as a decoy of sorts.

Once the doll is prepared, you should verbalize its purpose to it. Wigington recommends repeating the following: "I have made you, and your name is ______. You shall receive the negative energy sent by ______ in my place."

After the curse has been lifted, the puppet should be disposed of with a burial ceremony.

  • Take A Saltwater Bath To Wash The Curse Away

For those people who have always been drawn to saltwater, using a saltwater cure may be the best way to nullify a curse. Writer Tess Whitehurst details the instructions for preparing a purifying saltwater bath:

Add 1 cup Epsom salt, 1 cup sea salt, and ¼ cup baking soda and dissolve by stirring the water in a counterclockwise direction.

Before entering the bath, make sure to say a prayer along the lines of, "Divine Spirit, thank you for filling this water with vibrations of healing, purification, and love." Once in the tub, soak for at least 40 minutes.
