No one ever thinks they'll end up in a cult, but that's how they get you in the first place. One moment everyone is hanging out, singing songs, passing the pipe, then the next thing you know you're way in over your head and someone just handed you a cup of electric green Kool-Aid that does not smell right. It's time to get the heck out of dodge.

Unfortunately, it's not always easy to escape a cult, and sometimes you need to be prepared in order to extricate yourself from a sticky situation. The next time you find yourself in a little too deep with a group of leery-eyed cultists, refer to this handy list to find out how to get yourself out of there.

  • Have A Plan Ready To Set In Motion

So you've realized you're in a cult. Now what? It may be tempting to get out as soon as possible, but it's better to develop a plan first. Do you feel as though the cult is dangerous and action may be taken if you leave? If so, you'll want to get as far away from them as possible. Moving to another state is a good option, but that requires a bit of planning. Finding a safe place is of upmost importance. It also would be a good idea to line up a job if at all possible.

  • Do Not Let Anyone Involved Know You're Leaving

It's likely that you've come into contact with people in the cult who have become genuine friends - people who you don't want to leave behind. While it may be tempting to say goodbye to your friends, it's likely not a good idea. Regardless of the friendships shared with people in a cult, some may not yet realize the type of situation they are actually in and may take offense at your decision to leave. They may even go to the higher-ups in the organization and enlighten them to your plans of escape. For that reason, it is best to keep your plan a secret and not let anyone know you're leaving.

  • Volunteer As Much As Possible

While you're planning your exit, be sure to put in extra work in the cult. Becoming more active will help in several ways. First, it will show that you are loyal and dedicated to the organization and no one will question whether you're considering leaving or not. Additionally, the trust will probably help you gain more freedom within the organization, possibly making it easier to escape. If you're not allowed to come and go freely, your devotion may help grease the wheels with the higher ups. Make yourself stand out by your dedication and no one will suspect a thing.

  • Do Not Take Anyone With You

With the exception of your own children or family, it is not recommended that you help anyone else escape the cult. The more people who flee, the easier it will be to locate you. You'll draw much less attention being by yourself. It may seem difficult making the decision to leave and finding the strength to leave by yourself, but it's the safest way. You must put yourself first in this situation to succeed.
