20 Anime Villains Who Look Totally Innocent

Updated September 22, 2020 29.6k votes 5.5k voters 156k views20 items

Just because an anime character looks like a nice person doesn't mean that they are. In fact, innocent looking anime villains crop up in series of all genres.

Sometimes, these characters look kind and helpful before their true devious natures are revealed, lulling the viewer and the other characters into a false sense of security. This is true of Malty S Melromarc from Rising of the Shield Hero, who tricked the protagonist into believing she was on his side so that she could frame him for assault. Some villains stay adorable the whole time, as is the case with Kyuubey of Puella Magi Madoka Magica - no amount of bad behavior will change how fluffy they are. Others simply look like ordinary people, proving that you can't always discern someone's true nature by looking at them. Johan Liebert of Monster fits this category, and he's one of the most terrifying anime villains of all time.

Do these apparently innocent bad guys take you by surprise?

  • 5. Shion Sonozaki - 'Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni'

Just because you're a cute girl doesn't mean you can't be one of the most violent people in anime history. Shion not only straight upends lives, she also uses elaborate torture methods like removing peoples' fingernails.

The reason why Isabella got away with sending kids off to be consumed by demons is that she was able to present herself as a kind and loving mother who no one would suspect without hard evidence.

  • 7. Gaku Yashiro - 'ERASED'

Once it's clear that Gaku Yashiro is the one responsible for Kayo's demise, he begins to physically appear more villainous - but when he first shows up, he just looks like a friendly school teacher who cares about his students.

Because of Griffith's otherworldly beauty, it can sometimes be hard to conceive of him as a villain - but his power-grabbing methods are among the most vicious in anime history.
