Fan Theories From 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse'

Miles Morales isn't the only web-slinger in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Joined by Peter B. Parker, Gwen Stacy, Peni Parker, Spider-Man Noir, and Spider-Ham, Miles and company come together by the converging of parallel universes. On top of its reality-bending plot, Spider-Verse is littered with self-referential Easter eggs that take a keen eye to catch. Because of all this, it's no surprise that Spider-Verse has some of the most amazing fan theories out there. Peter B. Parker is the subject of many, with some people proposing he is a clone, while others speculate he's actually Ben Reilly, and even a few believe he is... Toby Maguire? (Yes, really) Other theories draw incredibly fascinating conclusions about the origin of the spider that bites Miles, the scope of Aunt May's intelligence, and the downfall of T.G.I.Spideys.

Whether you're a Spider-Man expert or a casual fan, these Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse fan theories will make you queue up the movie for a rewatch.

    Aunt May Is A Genius

    From Redditor /u/IrishTuber:

The Aunt May we see in this movie is a genius and she made or helped make all of her Spider Man's gadgets and tech.

This would explain why this universe's Spider-Man has a spider cave and why she has access to it. At the end of the movie, we know she's capable of making web shooters. She recognized the original goober instantly.

But where did she get this knowledge? She was most likely research partners with Dr. Olivia Octavius. Dr. Octavius says her friends call her "Liv" and that's what Aunt May calls her upon seeing her. Both also immediately recognize Peter B. Parker as being from another dimension, due to the nature of their research: Quantum and Multi-verse theory.

So why'd she give up such a promising career? To become a full-time mother figure for a newly orphaned Peter Parker.

Whether this is true or not, this version of Aunt May is definitely my favorite.

Noir, Gwen, Peni, And Ham All Have Story Arcs

    From Redditor /u/S0nicorn:

TLDR: Spider-Man Noir, Peni, Spider-Ham and Gwen all have subtle arcs over the course of the second half of Spider-Verse that ties back to the film's core theme of heroism. Noir is slightly prejudiced at first, but learns that anyone can be a hero regardless of race, sex, or whatever. Peni learns anyone can be a hero without having to rely on tech or power. Ham learns that there's more to being a hero than just fun and games. Gwen realizes that tragedies don't make a hero stronger, but friends and love certainly will. This is important to Miles' overall journey towards becoming a hero, and Peter Parker's realization that because anyone can be a hero, he doesn't constantly need to be one himself and can go start a family guilt-free.

Miles' Spider Is From Another Dimension

    From Redditor /u/Synsrighthand:

Now before I start this, I don’t know if this has already been thought of but it just came to me after recently rewatching the movie on Netflix.

So even though the title is pretty self explanatory I want to show my thought process on this. So most spider people tend to have relatively the same powers that we all know and love. Climbing walls, spider sense, enhanced strength, and usually they’re smart enough to make their own web shooters. And all of their spiders came from from their home universe.

So when Miles is tagging the wall in the subway tunnel, his spider shows up and we see that it glitches as it makes its way to miles. And this only happens to people or things that are in a dimension that isn’t theirs.

When someone gets bit by one of these spiders, the idea is that its venom transfers the DNA into their body and it changes them, or something like that. I’ve never been very clear on the matter. But if that is the general idea, then maybe when Miles’ spider bit him, because it was from an alternate dimension, the atoms react to being in a system from the current dimension, and cause some sort of evolution in his powers which let him turn invisible and generate electricity.

Peter Parker's Middle Name Is Ben

    From Redditor /u/davidlee29:

Recently, I had the chance to rewatch Into The Spider-Verse, and I noticed something that didn't bother me before. Why is Peter B Parker, Peter B Parker? Think about it. Would it just be to give a name distinction? Yes, maybe, but I think there's some more meaning to it. So, here it goes; Peter B Parker's full name is Peter Ben Parker.

First, Uncle Ben was singled out as the next of kin in the will of Richard Parker, so he must have been pretty good friends with him. What's even more, Peter was left at Uncle Ben's house that night, so yeah, those two were pretty close. Also, we know that there was no notable relative of the Parker's had a name that starts with a "B" except Uncle Ben. So, it isn't much of a stretch to assume that Peter B. Parker is Peter Ben Parker. All that aside, it adds more meaning from a narrative perspective. It adds much more to the relationship between Peter and Uncle Ben, more than say, if the "B" was Bernard or Bob.

I couldn't come up any conclusive proof about it, but still, it is an interesting theory.

Peter Parker's Dimension Doesn't Include Gwen

    From Redditor /u/PunkandCannonballer:

I don't know if this is well-accepted, or posted before, but I haven't seen it anywhere. I've heard a few people complain that Peter should have reacted more to seeing Gwen again considering their history together is a pretty big deal. I believe that they purposefully had Peter acting this way to hint at the fact that he doesn't know her. He seems pretty honest and a little immature emotionally, so it doesn't seem likely that he would be able to hide emotions if he had them.

The simple, easy solution is that he's from a universe where he never knew Gwen. This explains why he doesn't know her name, or react to seeing her when he and Miles are strung up, as well as explaining why he doesn't catch on to any of the times Gwen is feeling guilty/sad about losing her Peter.

Peter Parker Gets To Visit His Favorite Burger Joint

    From Redditor /u/iAmEchoe:

While T.G.I.Spideys turned out to be a failure in the end, it still drew enough customers away from Peter B's favorite burger place causing it to close in his universe but remain open in Miles universe where T.G.I.Spideys never existed.
