Since the first adaptation of Pride and Prejudice in 1938, Jane Austen's books have returned to the screen dozens of times. From the movie theater to streaming platforms, her work is regularly being remade, adapted for the modern era, or the inspiration for an homage.
Many TV shows of Austen's work are more faithful period reproductions of Jane Austen books, like the 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice, or Persuasion from 1981. The longer television movie serials allow more time to bring all the plot points of the books into the show. Some Austen period dramas do bring in modern sensibilities, like the often salacious 2008 Sense and Sensibility. Most of the modern adaptations and versions of Jane Austen's books "with a twist." Bridget Jones's Diary and Clueless are movies that take key points of the plot (Pride and Prejudice and Emma, respectively) and bring them to a more modern era. The exception are the web series, which are incredibly fresh in both their format and interpretation of these classic books.
Whether you love them for their point of view, their cheesiness, or how faithfully they adapt the book, which shows and movies based on Jane Austen's books are the best?
