Alva Myrdal was a Swedish sociologist and politician. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1982. She married Gunnar Myrdal in 1924. Born in Uppsala, she first came to public notice in the 1930s, and was one of the main driving forces in the creation of the Swedish welfare state. She coauthored the book Crisis in the Population Question. The basic premise of Crisis in the Population Question is to find what social reforms are needed to allow for individual liberty while also promoting child-bearing, and encouraging Swedes to have children. In the 1990 general election, the NLD won 59% of the national votes and 81% of the seats in Parliament . She had, however, already been detained under house arrest before the elections.
