A musician doesn't need to be a Christian artist to write a catchy song about Jesus. The tracks on this list prove just that. The best non-religious Jesus songs include several mainstream hits by artists that you wouldn’t typically associate with any kind of Christian song. Nevertheless, many bands and musicians have included The Big Guy in songs, with great success. These are the songs for all the non-believers – the ones you might hum along with regardless of the message.
The late, great Alex Chilton penned Big Star’s song “Jesus Christ.” Listening to or reading the lyrics, it seems obvious that he’s borrowing from a lot of Christian hymns. But is this more of a tongue-in-cheek song almost mocking religion, or something more? Whatever it is, this is a great rock song for the holidays for everyone, including non-Christians. And yes, there are plenty of songs on this list that are most certainly non-religious Jesus songs. Songs like “I’m not Jesus” by the Polish death metal band Behemoth (first performed by The Ramones) are pretty straightforward. And Slayer pulls no punches in heavily criticizing religion with the song “Jesus Saves.” The same can be said about Soundgarden’s 1991 song “Jesus Christ Pose.”
