Fighting has been a part of the NHL for as long as the league has existed. Considering this, there's likely a great deal of fans out there who watch hockey just to see the best fighters in the NHL really go at it.&nbsp;Call 'em hockey goons if you dare, enforcer type skaters are often one of the most popular players on their respective teams both with fans and with their teammates. With that in mind, who are the all-time most feared fighters in the NHL?Check out the list of top NHL fighters below and vote up the ones you'd fear most. Hockey fights are just part of the NHL. While some sports don't encourage fighting, hockey is completely the opposite, breaking into barroom brawls at a moment's notice.&nbsp;Heck, the sport even has a name for aggressive players who excel at violence. They're called enforcers.Hockey's most vicious enforcers are barely even playing the same sport. These kinds of goons can be assets and liabilities. They'll check a player into the boards to make a play, but they'll also slash at his head just because they're righteously pissed.Attacking others is generally frowned upon in a civilized society, but slap on a pair of skates and you can make a career out of it. Even hockey players go too far, though, and it's the guys who went too far who made it on this list.&nbsp;With so many players making names for themselves throwing dirty punches throughout the NHL's history, we decided to run through the worst offenders that the league has ever seen. Mr. Hockey himself, Gordie Howe, is right up there with Gretzky with an impressive hockey career that lasted until he was 52 years of age. Along with other NHL legends like Mario Lemieux, Bobby Orr, Mark Messier and Maurice Richard, these hockey greats dominated the league during their time.Many will follow in the footsteps, or skate strides, of these all-time best NHL players but few will ever reach the level of greatness that these talented men have. Going down as one of the <a class="edS-cl" href="https://www.ranker.com/list/best-current-nhl-goalies/ranker-hockey?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">best NHL goalies</a> of all time isn&#39;t easy. Former Vancouver Canucks goaltender Kirk McLean once said, &quot;It&#39;s pretty tough for a goalie when you look at it. You&#39;re always the last line of defense. If you let a goal in, you can&#39;t go to the bench and hide between the guys or anything.&quot; While goaltending alone does not win games or championships, it can be the difference between a win and an embarrassing loss. Certainly there has been some stellar goaltenders in the history of the NHL, but a select few stand above and beyond the rest.

Who are the greatest hockey goalies of all time? Which goalkeepers have the most impressive records? There are plenty of amazing goalkeepers on this list and without them, their teams would be in trouble. The old NHL adage is that you&#39;re only as good as your goalie. The best current NHL players are not just the league-leading skaters and goaltenders in the league right now but also some of the best hockey players in the world. These players are consistently leading their teams in statistical categories and in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

As the NHL&#39;s golden child and <a href="/list/fan-favorite-nhl-players/powerofthepuck" target="_blank">fan favorite NHL player</a>, Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins is seen by many as the best current NHL player. The young star quickly made his mark in the league by leading the Penguins to the Stanley Cup Championship in 2009 at the age of 21, the youngest captain to ever do so. He had a little help though with Evgeni Malkin, who also makes this list, serving as the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the MVP of the playoffs.

But there are many more great current NHL players in the league besides those playing in Pittsburgh. Steven Stamkos, Alexander Giroux, Alexander Ovechkin, Pavel Datsyuk, Zdeno Chara and Jonathan Toews are all among the elite forwards and defensemen in the NHL right now. In net, Henrik Lundqvist, Jonathan Quick and Jimmy Howard are seen as the top NHL goaltenders right now.

These professional hockey defensemen aren't just the best to ever man the blue line in the National Hockey League but also some of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/top-10-hockey-players-of-all-time/beausteele2000" target="_blank">best hockey players to ever play the game</a>. With the retirement of Detroit Red Wings captain Nick Lidstrom in May 2012, the argument over which defensive player is the best ever with two names dominating the discussion. Younger fans will swear that Lidstrom, who won the Norris Trophy as the top defenseman in the NHL seven times, is the best NHL defenseman ever. As perhaps the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/famous-hockey-players-from-sweden/reference" target="_blank">most successful hockey player from Sweden</a>, he played 20 years in the NHL, won four championships, became the first European-born player to captain a Stanley Cup-champion team and won the gold medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics, all while acting like a true professional and highly respected gentleman while doing so. Others will argue that the best NHL defenseman of all time is hands down Bobby Orr. The long-time member of the Boston Bruins won the Norris Trophy eight times plus won the league's MVP award, the Hart Trophy, three times during his 12 seasons in the NHL. The Hockey Hall of Fame member not only still holds several league records but also changed how the game was played with his innovative style. Lidstrom and Orr were one-of-a-kind players who will always be remembered as the top blue-liners to ever take the ice but they are far from the only highly talented defensemen in NHL history. The likes of Doug Harvey, Paul Coffee, Raymond Bourque, Eddie Shore and even Chris Chelios all had amazing careers as NHL defensemen and deserve lots of credit for that. These videos are not for the faint of heart and not appropriate for all audiences, but they represent some of the most graphic and bloody hockey fights of all time.&nbsp;Hockey fights come in all shapes and sizes from the one-punch wonders that leave one of the two competitors out cold on the ice to the brawls that are built on long rivalries which build up to bench-clearing melees. On occasion, sometimes the fights have even extended beyond the ice into the stands as the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/most-outrageous-athlete-meltdowns-with-fans/sportsyeah" target="_blank">fans fight with players</a>, like the notorious incident in <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/23/sports/hockey/23brawl.html?mtrref=www.google.com&amp;gwh=14380E337C05A2B957C83D9262DDDBA5&amp;gwt=pay" target="_blank">1979 when members of the Boston Bruins tussled with New York Rangers fans at Madison Square Garden.</a>&nbsp;Which hockey fight is the best? That&#39;s a topic that will be argued upon by hockey fans around the globe for eternity. Some fans, when considering the biggest hockey fight, will point to the <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/1997/03/27/avalanche-red-wings-brawl-1997/" target="_blank">1997 &quot;Brawl in Hockeytown&quot;</a> when old scores were settled as the Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche were involved in a game with no less than nine huge fights. Others will argue that it was the 2004 tilt between the <a href="https://sports.vice.com/en_ca/article/nzawv8/mayhem-in-philly-an-oral-history-of-the-epic-senators-flyers-brawl" target="_blank">Philadelphia Senators and Ottawa Senators</a> that takes the cake as five fights closed out the game and set an NHL record for the most ejections in a game (20) and the most penalty minutes in a game (419).

Like <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/best-hockey-coach-meltdowns/the-round-mound" target="_blank">hockey coach meltdowns</a>,&nbsp;fighting isn&#39;t just a thing for North America hockey. The actual world record for penalty minutes in a single game is owned by the <a href="https://en.khl.ru" target="_blank">Kontinental Hockey League</a> in Europe and Asia. On January 9, 2010, players from the <a href="https://russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2010/12/10/avangard-vs-vityaz-the-bloodiest-rivalry-in-hockey-escalates/" target="_blank">Vityaz Chekhov and Avangard Omsk</a> cleared the benches for a massive brawl. Both coaches and 35 players were ejected while 707 penalty minutes and nearly $200K in fines followed.

Whichever fight you like best, it&#39;s hard to argue that these clips are not some of the wildest of all time.

There are a lot of athletes with bad hair, and the world of hockey is no exception. Ice hockey is an incredibly tough game and needs players who are just crazy enough, especially at the highest level, that they come with some of the most unique personalities in sports. This individual style unfortunately extends to what they've got going on under the helmet - and from mullets, to crazy curls, and long, luscious locks, the hockey players here have the absolute worst hair in NHL hockey.Hockey players are courageous, reckless, wild and not afraid to show any of these characteristics. They are also not afraid of showing off their spectacular dental work, uniquely manicured facial hair, and the bad hairstyles of, well, about what you'd expect from pro hockey stars. Hair in the NHL always has been, and always will be, something to behold.On any given NHL game night, the arena will almost certainly feature a couple of spectacular mullets, some awful helmet hair, some questionable decisions and, generally speaking, <a class="edS-cl" href="https://www.ranker.com/list/worst-hairstyles-of-all-time/rachel-green?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">the worst hairstyles</a> in not only the NHL, but in the entire sporting landscape.Whether it's the all-time classic curly mullet of Jaromir Jagr or the unique styling of modern day stars like Patrick Kane and Drew Doughty, the National Hockey League is sure to produce some of the worst hairstyles in all of sports history.

Every hockey coach currently in the NHL begins the season with hopes of leading his team to the Stanley Cup. The Stanley Cup is probably <a href="https://www.ranker.com/list/best-championship-trophies/pedro-cerrano" target="_blank">the most famous trophy in all of sports</a>, and all NHL coaches spend the whole season in pursuit of that single goal.

Coaches like Joel Quenneville, who has three Stanley Cup wins, and Barry Trotz, who won his first in 2018, have been around for years and have reached the mountaintop. New York Islanders

The best NHL teams of all time are those National Hockey league teams who have performed the best throughout the years, won the most Stanley Cup Championships and overall dominated the league. Most, if not all, hockey fans are partial but in the record books, these teams stand among the elite as the winningest and best NHL teams ever.If you judge a better NHL team by the number of championships under their belt, only one team can take that number one spot. The Montreal Canadiens, in their nearly 100-year history, have a whopping 24 Stanley Cup wins. The closest competitor, the Toronto Maple Leafs, only has 13. Following in third comes the Detroit Red Wings with 11. Of those three only Detroit has won the title recently, in 2008, with the last Canadiens championship back in 1993 and the Maple Leafs going back to 1967 for their most recent championship.On the other end of the spectrum, there are also a handful of NHL teams who never won a championship yet. People who should be in the Hockey Hall of Fame include some of the best players, coaches, builders and broadcasters who are all deserving of being enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Canada. For one reason or another, these talented men have been overlooked come induction time and as of the 2012 Hockey Hall of Fame class, have not gotten the call.For many of these retired hockey players, an induction into the Hockey Hall is fairly likely but simply has not happened yet. Each year, a maximum of four male and two female players plus a total of two builders and officials can be inducted into the hall. Due to these restrictions, many quality players are forced to wait several years while those with slightly higher legacies are chosen instead. The likes of Brendan Shannahan, Theo Fleury, Jeremy Roenick and Eric Lindros are all great examples of those who will likely get the call eventually.Then there's another breed of people who should be in the Hockey Hall of Fame who have simply been overlooked for one reason or another. Few can deny that Hockey Night in Canada broadcasters Don Cherry and Ron MacLean have made an impact on the game, yet they've so far not received induction into the builder category. Rick Tocchet had a long and successful career as a player and coach in the NHL but many will say his off-ice legal issues have kept him out of the hall. Going a bit further back, many players from decades ago, such as Butch Goring, Murray Murdoch and Billy Reay, were never inducted and likely won't be remembered now despite their deserving contributions to the game.Overall, these men are among the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/top-hockey-goaltenders-of-all-time/angie-marie" target="_blank">best hockey goaltenders</a>, <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/best-nhl-defensemen-of-all-time/sportsyeah" target="_blank">best NHL defensemen</a> and overall <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/15-great-nhl-players" target="_blank">best hockey players of all time</a> yet they've so far not been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. The <a class="edS-cl" href="https://www.ranker.com/list/best-hockey-coaches-of-all-time/ranker-hockey?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">best hockey coach</a> meltdowns come when the head coaches, assistant coaches or general managers of teams in the NHL, AHL, ECHL and other top hockey leagues lose their temper (and sometimes their clothes). Once they snap all hell breaks loose and everything from sticks to benches rain down on the ice. Usually when hockey coaches flip out it's because they disagree with the referee for one reason or another. Most times, coaches will just blow it off but every so often a call gets under their skin and they lose it. The tantrum usually starts with cursing then can escalate to the coach throwing objects on the ice. Whatever is within arm's reach is fair game like hockey sticks, water bottles, clipboards and in the case of former New Jersey Devils coach Robbie Ftorek, an entire wooden bench often ends up on the playing surface.Some coaches however take flipping out to another level completely. Former <a class="edS-cl" href="https://www.ranker.com/list/best-los-angeles-kings-coaches/ranker-hockey?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">Los Angeles Kings coach</a> Tom Webster did just that when he hurled a hockey stick at former NHL referee Kerry Fraser in a fit of rage. Webster later earned a 12-game suspension. Russian hockey coach Andrey Nazarov earned an indefinite ban after getting into a physical altercation with fans behind the bench. Greg Pankewicz however takes the cake for originality of a hockey coach meltdown. As the assistant coach of the Colorado Eagles, then a member of the Central Hockey League, Pankewicz went bananas behind the bench during a February 2011 game. In addition to cursing at the officials and tossing various objects onto the ice, Pankewicz went as far as to stand up on the bench and begin stripping. As he stood on the bench topless with everything from his tie to his shoes on the ice, Pankewicz was finally ejected.For as long as there is hockey coaches and hockey referees, there will certainly always be hockey meltdowns just like these ones. The worst NHL coaches of all time are really good at doing other hockey-related things, like playing the game or broadcasting, but when it came their turn to coach in the National Hockey League, they just plain sucked. These worst NHL coaches ever tallied some of the worst coaching records in professional hockey, disappointed fans and overall failed miserably at their job. Quite simply, it doesn't get much worse than this in terms of NHL coaches.For many of these bad NHL coaches, prior to taking over as a head coach of a professional hockey team, they saw a great deal of success as a player in the league. Wayne Gretzky is perhaps the best example of this when he went from being arguably one of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/great-nhl-hockey-players/uber" target="_blank">best hockey players in history</a> to a disappointing owner and coach of <a class="edS-cl" href="https://www.ranker.com/list/the-best-arizona-coyotes-of-all-time/ranker-hockey?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">the Phoenix Coyotes</a>, leading them to a sub-par performance over his four years as head coach. Lou Agnotti, Paul Holmgren, Jim Anderson and Butch Goring also fall into this category having made that disastrous leap from being a star NHL player to a terrible NHL coach.Similarly, many who don't have what it takes to coach in the NHL have gone on to successful careers in other aspects of the game, such as broadcasting. Mike Milbury is a well-known face in the hockey broadcasting world but what you might not know is that he once coached in the league, and not so well. The same thing happened with Barry Melrose. He and his mullet can frequently be seen on ESPN and the NHL Network, a place he settled into in between being fired as head coach of the Los Angeles Kings in 1995 then again as head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2008.So whether these bad NHL coaches failed to make the transition from player to coach, like Steve Ludzik, or simply have their name in the record books for the worst winning percentages ever, like when Dave Allison led the Ottawa Senators to a 2-22-1 record in the 1995-1996 season, each of these coaches tried their hand at coaching in the National Hockey League and simply couldn't cut it. Like the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/worst-nfl-coaches-of-all-time/arthur-roderick" target="_blank">worst NFL coaches of all time</a>, if nothing else, they give us something to talk about.

Jason Alan Zucker is an American ice hockey player currently playing for the Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League. Zucker participated in the 2010 World Juniors for Team USA and won the gold medal. He was also a member of Team USA's bronze medal winning team at the 2011 World Juniors.

Bob Nystrom

Robert Thore Nystrom (born October 10, 1952) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey right winger. He played for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1972–86. He is best remembered as having scored the winning goal at the 7:11 mark of overtime to give the New York Islanders the 1980 Stanley Cup title. This signaled the first of four straight championships for the club. He was also among the last NHL players to not wear a helmet during a game.
Playing his minor hockey in Hinton, Alberta, Nystrom is immortalized on the town's wall of fame. He is arguably the most successful NHL player from the geographical area that yielded the likes of Dave Scatchard and Dean McAmmond.
His son Eric last played professional hockey for Norway’s Stavanger Oilers, and previously played for the Nashville Predators, Calgary Flames, Minnesota Wild, and Dallas Stars of the NHL.

Michael Cammalleri

Michael Anthony Cammalleri (born June 8, 1982) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played 15 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for five different teams. He was selected in the second round, 49th overall, by the Los Angeles Kings at the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
Cammalleri made his NHL debut with the Kings in 2002. In September 2007, he scored the first regular season goal ever scored in a NHL game played in Europe. After playing with the Calgary Flames for one season in 2008–09, he joined the Montreal Canadiens, with whom he scored the 20,000th goal in franchise history in 2009 and tied a franchise record for goals in one playoff series in 2010. He returned to the Flames in 2012 following an unusual transaction in which he was traded in the middle of a game. After the expiry of his contract in 2014, Cammalleri signed a five-year contract with the New Jersey Devils, but was bought-out just three years into the deal. In the subsequent free agency period, he signed a one-year contract to return to the Kings, opting for a second tenure with a team for the second time in his career.
Representing Canada internationally on four occasions, Cammalleri won bronze and silver medals at the 2001 and 2002 World Junior Championships respectively. He was named the tournament's best forward in 2002. He won a gold medal at the 2007 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships. An all-star in college and the American Hockey League, Cammalleri played in the "Cold War", an outdoor game that set a then world attendance record in 2001. He has also been recognized for his involvement in charitable efforts supporting children and the military.

Mathieu Schneider

Mathieu David Schneider (born June 12, 1969) is an American former professional ice hockey player. Considered an offensive defenseman, Schneider played 1289 games in the National Hockey League with ten different teams, scoring 233 goals and totalling 743 points. He won the Stanley Cup in 1993 with the Montreal Canadiens.

Jeffrey Craig Halpern (born May 3, 1976) is an American former professional ice hockey player.
He previously played for the Washington Capitals twice, Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens and Phoenix Coyotes. He was also captain of the United States national team for the 2008 World Championships.
He is currently an assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL.
In 14 NHL seasons, he had 152 goals and 221 assists (373 points) in 976 regular-season games. He also had seven goals and 14 points in 39 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Jason Demers (born June 9, 1988) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing for the Arizona Coyotes of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the seventh round, 186th overall, at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Lazarus "Larry, Rock" Zeidel (June 1, 1928 – June 17, 2014) was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman, most notably for the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League, for whom he played nine seasons, and in the National Hockey League for the Chicago Black Hawks and the Philadelphia Flyers.

Eric Nystrom

Eric Thore Nystrom (born February 14, 1983) is an American former professional ice hockey player. He was a first round selection of the Calgary Flames, taken 10th overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, and made his NHL debut with Calgary in 2005.  Nystrom has also played for the Minnesota Wild, Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators. He played four seasons of college hockey with the Michigan Wolverines before he turned professional. On four occasions, Nystrom has played with the United States national team, most recently at the 2010 World Championship. He is the son of former NHL player Bob Nystrom.

Hy Buller

Hyman Buller (March 15, 1926 – August 3, 1968) was a Canadian ice hockey defenceman.  Nicknamed the "Blueline Blaster" because of his penchant for hitting opposing players above the skate toe and below the pads, Buller was one of two Jewish professional hockey players in the 1940s and 1950s.He was on the Eastern Amateur Hockey League’s (EAHL) Second All-Star Team in 1943, the American Hockey League’s (AHL) First All-Star Team in 1949 and 1951, the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Second All-Star Team in 1952, and he played in the 1952 NHL All-Star Game. Buller was greatly admired by hockey legends Gordie Howe and Maurice Richard, and other contemporaries not only for his solid plays but also for his good sportsmanship. He played in five NHL seasons, first for the Detroit Red Wings and later for the New York Rangers, before retiring in 1954. Buller was married to Elaine Witten for 22 years and they had three sons, Bob, Bruce, and Jeff. He died from cancer in 1968.
