McHale was selected third overall in the 1980 NBA draft by the Celtics, and spent his first six seasons as a valuable bench player, backing up forwards Cedric Maxwell and Larry Bird, being twice named the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year. After Maxwell was traded prior to the 1985–1986 season, McHale became a starter alongside Bird and center Robert Parish, where the three formed what is often considered the best front-court trio in NBA history. He won three NBA championships with the Celtics. Having already played in an NBA All-Star game as a bench player, after moving to starter, he played in an additional six All-Star games, and he was named all-NBA Defensive team six total times.

Buffalo traded Archibald to the Boston Celtics as part of a 7-player deal before the start of the next season. His career at the Celtics started poorly. He showed up 20 pounds overweight. However, he adjusted and helped guide the Celtics to the best record in the NBA for three consecutive years (1979–1982). Archibald won his first and only NBA championship with the Boston Celtics in the 1980–81 season alongside young NBA star Larry Bird. In Game 6 of the 1981 NBA Finals, Archibald recorded 13 points and 12 assists as the Celtics closed out the series against the Houston Rockets.

Drafted by the Boston Celtics in 1981, Ainge played sparingly during his rookie season, but broke into the starting lineup in year two. However, new coach K.C. Jones moved Ainge back to bench in his third season, starting Gerald Henderson instead. Ainge remained an important role player off the bench, helping the Celtics defeat the rival Lakers in the NBA Finals that year. The Celtics traded Henderson in the off-season, returning Ainge to the starting guard position opposite Dennis Johnson. Ainge remained a starter for the Celtics for most of the next five seasons. The Celtics won the championship again in 1986. That team is widely considered to be one of the greatest in NBA history.
