Why Does He Care So Much About Cleanliness?

One of Levi's most prominent character traits is his need to keep everything clean. While this is often played for laughs, it actually has a tragic origin.

Levi grew up in the Underground. As a young child, he lived in a filthy brothel with his mother until she passed and he was rescued by his uncle Kenny. He associates dirt with his childhood trauma. You might have guessed as much, but you might not know that the connection has been confirmed by the creator. When asked about the reason behind Levi's need for a spotless environment, he said:

One day I will draw the backstory, please stay tuned.

This implies that the backstory is the reason.

Hange doesn't bathe nearly enough for Levi's liking, and he refuses to simply accept it.

In order to make sure his fellow soldier is clean, he physically forces them to bathe after knocking them out. That's harsh.

Levi typically only sleeps for two or three hours a night. Since he sleeps so little, he doesn't bother with going to bed or putting on pajamas. Instead, he sleeps on a chair, in whatever clothing he wore that day.

Isayama describes this as "slight bouts of insomnia" but this sounds more like severe, chronic insomnia. We can't imagine it's doing great things for his health.

If you were hoping to see what Levi's like when he's wasted, we're sorry to report that you can't - at least, not in canon.

Levi has such a high tolerance for alcohol that no matter how much he drinks, he won't get drunk.

His Exact Age Is A Mystery

Levi's age has been a source of confusion for a while now. This is because Isayama has said some contradictory things on the subject. He once said that he was "surprisingly old" but didn't explain what that meant aside from saying that he was "older than 30."

In another interview, he claimed that he was in his late 30s. According to Armin's voice actor Marina Inoue, Isayama said this by mistake because he was nervous - he should have said that Levi was in his early 30s. The Attack on Titan ANSWERS guidebook confirmed this. Still, we don't know where in the early-30s half-decade his age falls.

If Levi weren't busy leading the Survey Corps, he might be running a tea shop. While this is pretty different from what he does now, it seems fitting.

What kind of tea do you think he'd serve?
