We’ve come a long way from the original trilogy and the handful of lightsaber designs it offered. Now, Star Wars lightsabers come in a plethora of shapes and sizes and colors. What’s remained constant, however, is the importance of a Force wielder’s lightsaber and the bond between blade and owner. As Obi-Wan tells Anakin, “This weapon is your life.” The weapon is a reflection and an extension of whomever wields it. For example, Kylo Ren’s lightsaber is powered by a fractured crystal, mirroring his own split loyalties and instability.
Since much of the Star Wars Legends narratives are no longer considered canon, Star Wars lightsaber history has gotten a little more confusing. Vader’s lightsaber is no longer powered by a synthetic crystal, for example. In the case of lightsabers that appear in Star Wars canon and Legends, canon lore takes precedence.
From the iconic Skywalker lightsaber to the mysterious Darksaber, there is no shortage of light-based weaponry in the galaxy far, far away. Here are some of the most important and unique lightsabers in the Star Wars universe.
History: Kylo Ren constructed his lightsaber using an ancient design from the Sith planet Malachor.
Characteristics: Kylo Ren’s crossguard lightsaber was powered by a cracked red kyber crystal, which gave it its unstable appearance.
Status: Once Kylo firmly rejected the Dark Side in The Rise of Skywalker, he threw his lightsaber into the ocean on Kef Bir.
History: Luke built his second lightsaber by following instructions left for him by Obi-Wan. He built his lightsaber using scavenged parts from Tatooine.
Characteristics: This saber is similar in design to Obi-Wan’s third lightsaber. The lightsaber is powered by a synthetic crystal that Luke made himself, instead of the traditionally used and naturally occurring kyber crystal.
Status: The lightsaber was last seen in Luke’s possession.
History: Vader built a new lightsaber after he lost his second one during his duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar.
Characteristics: In the Expanded Universe, Vader’s new lightsaber was powered by a synthetic crystal given to him by Emperor Palpatine. The new weapon emitted a red blade which better reflected his new Sith status.
Status: It was last seen tumbling down a reactor shaft aboard the Death Star. It was quickly followed by a wailing Palpatine.
History: Anakin constructed his second lightsaber after he lost his first one, along with his arm, at the Battle of Geonosis.
Characteristics: This lightsaber has a single blue blade.
Status: Rey wielded this lightsaber in Episodes VII-IX, but ultimately buried it in the sand on Tatooine.
