We’ve come a long way from the original trilogy and the handful of lightsaber designs it offered. Now, Star Wars lightsabers come in a plethora of shapes and sizes and colors. What’s remained constant, however, is the importance of a Force wielder’s lightsaber and the bond between blade and owner. As Obi-Wan tells Anakin, “This weapon is your life.” The weapon is a reflection and an extension of whomever wields it. For example, Kylo Ren’s lightsaber is powered by a fractured crystal, mirroring his own split loyalties and instability.
Since much of the Star Wars Legends narratives are no longer considered canon, Star Wars lightsaber history has gotten a little more confusing. Vader’s lightsaber is no longer powered by a synthetic crystal, for example. In the case of lightsabers that appear in Star Wars canon and Legends, canon lore takes precedence.
From the iconic Skywalker lightsaber to the mysterious Darksaber, there is no shortage of light-based weaponry in the galaxy far, far away. Here are some of the most important and unique lightsabers in the Star Wars universe.
History: Obi-Wan had three lightsabers over the course of his life – he built his last lightsaber after his second was destroyed by Darth-Maul.
Characteristics: This saber has a skeletal make with a black ridged handgrip and a blue blade.
Status: The lightsaber was taken by Darth Vader after he and his former master dueled for the final time.
Mace Windu's Lightsaber
History: Mace Windu built his second lightsaber upon being appointed a senior member of the Jedi Council.
Characteristics: Unlike most Jedi lightsabers, Windu’s blade was purple.
Status: Windu’s lightsaber flew out of Palpatine’s office window after Anakin cut off the Jedi Master’s hand.
Darth Maul's Lightsaber
History: Maul based his lightsaber design on an ancient Zabrak weapon called a Zhaboka.
Characteristics: Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber was powered by four red crystals.
Status: His lightsaber was cut in half (like the Sith Lord himself) by Obi-Wan Kenobi during their duel on Naboo. Maul held on to and used one half of his lightsaber until he lost it in a duel with his former master, Palpatine.
Rey's Yellow Lightsaber
History: The origins of Rey's lightsaber are something of a mystery; she's simply shown with it at the end of Rise of Skywalker.
Characteristics: The lightsaber emits a yellow glow, and its hilt seems to be made out of the staff Rey wielded throughout Episodes VII-IX.
Status: Rey is last seen holding her lightsaber on Tatooine, gazing at the twin suns.
