Competing with Intellivision and ColecoVision, the Atari 5200 SuperSystem made its debut in November 1982 and was produced until May 1984 when the Atari 7800 took over. Similar to Nintendo, games for this early console were sold in cartridge form. The cartridges were inserted into the console, which featured a eight-bit 1.79-MHz processor and played using one of four joystick or trak-ball controllers.Though the Atari 5200 reportedly sold over one million units, it was not as popular as other game consoles of the time. It may not be among the top consoles of all time, but if nothing else, the Atari 5200 and Atari 5200 games provides video game enthusiasts with a place to look back upon as one console that brought the industry to where it is today.
