Beyond the Star Wars film saga and across two separate Expanded Universe franchises, there have been many Jedi trained by Luke. For those who only joined the fandom after watching The Force Awakens, there's a whole other set of stories in the pre-Disney canon that feature many of Luke Skywalker's Jedi apprentices. In fact, Luke set up an academy on Yavin IV to train a new generation of Jedi after the fall of the Empire.

As you'll see from the list below, many of Luke's Jedi students went on to fight in many of the wars that engulfed the galaxy far, far away as new threats entered New Republic space. One conflict that you'll see recurring here is the Yuuzhan Vong War, which affected much of the Star Wars universe and the lives of most of Luke's Jedi. For many of the characters below, that war was a deciding moment in their lives.

Some Jedi overcame the challenge and became great heroes. Others fell to the dark side, committing atrocities that would put Kylo Ren to shame. Will Rey fare better than some of the Jedi from the old canon? Only time will tell.

    Lowbacca

Lowbacca was an incredibly special Wookiee because he had the rare gift of being sensitive to the Force. As the nephew of the heroic Chewbacca, Lowbacca was born to fight for the good of the galaxy. He was another one of the second generation of Jedi pupils to fight in the Yuuzhan Vong War. While he was banished for a short while from the Jedi Order for leaking secret information to an enemy, he was eventually welcomed back. He fought alongside Luke until the end of the old canon.

    Jaina Solo

Like her twin brother, Jaina Solo joined Luke's academy from a young age and excelled as a Jedi Knight. During the Yuuzhan Vong War, she joined Rogue Squadron, the New Republic's elite fighter squadron and proved herself to be an ace pilot like her father and uncle before her.

When Jacen Solo turned to the dark side, Jaina was forced to confront the new Sith Lord in a duel. Jaina struck her brother down in order to save the galaxy from his oppressive rule. It was one of the most tragic developments of the old Expanded Universe.

    Mara Jade

Mara Jade began her career as an Emperor's Hand, one of Palpatine's elite Force-sensitive enforcers, killing Rebel agents and dissenters for the good of the Empire. After Palpatine was killed, Mara Jade left her life as an assassin behind and became a smuggler. That brought her into direct confrontation with Luke Skywalker. While they were initially at odds, Mara Jade joined Luke's Jedi Praxeum on Yavin IV and the two eventually fell in love.

Luke and Mara Jade married and had a child together. She became a powerful Jedi Master and fought in many battles to save the galaxy. Eventually, she met her end at the hands of her nephew, Jacen, who slayed her during his rise as the new Dark Lord of the Sith.

    Anakin Solo

Anakin was the youngest of the Solo children, named after his infamous grandfather. But this young Solo was an agent of the light, a good Jedi who fought bravely in the Yuuzhan Vong War. His most heroic exploit was his leadership during a mission on the planet Myrkr to destroy the Voxyn, a species of Jedi-hunting creatures created by the Yuuzhan Vong during the war. Anakin sacrificed his life during that mission to help his comrades escape the battle. While this young Jedi fell, his memory was not soon forgotten.

    Kyle Katarn

While we were introduced to Kyle Katarn as an Imperial stormtrooper, it wasn't long before he saw the error of his ways and turned against the oppressive war machine. Kyle became a mercenary, working for the New Republic as a spy. This eventually led him to Luke Skywalker, who trained him to become a Jedi. Kyle later found the Valley of the Jedi, the ancient site of a great battle between the forces of light and dark, which augmented his powers and helped him take down Dark Jedi such as Jerec and Desann. Kyle served Luke's Jedi Order until the end of the old canon.

Despite being the heir to the throne of an interplanetary kingdom known as the Hapes Consortium, Tenel Ka decided to join Luke's New Jedi Order. While training to become a Jedi, she became friends with Jaina and Jacen Solo. During the Yuuzhan Vong War, she fought alongside Jacen and fell in love with him. After the war, Tenel Ka became the Queen Mother of the Hapes Consortium against her wishes and secretly had a child with Jacen. When Jacen turned to the dark side and became a Sith Lord, Tenel Ka opposed him and hid their child, Allana, from him.

After the fall of Jacen Solo, Tenel Ka continued to aid the Jedi. She decided to give Allana to Han and Leia in order to protect the child from Hapan politics. Tenel Ka stuck around until the end of the old canon.
