Vote up the magical details that make Luna lovable.

Many Harry Potter fans single out Luna Lovegood as their favorite character for her quirky and eccentric personality, and her tendency to say whatever is on her mind - or what everyone else won't say. Although Evanna Lynch's portrayal in the Harry Potter movies captures her personality overall, the films leave out some key facts about Luna.

She comes across as a much more layered protagonist in the books, as well as in comments made by J.K. Rowling in interviews or on the Pottermore/Wizarding World website. Luna's impact on Harry's life is far greater outside the movies, and extra details about Luna's character prove why she was such a true friend to him.

Luna Comforts Hermione When She And Ron Aren't Getting Along

Hermione and Ron's estrangement is more bitter in the book version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, where Ron drives Hermione to tears multiple times, in part because of his intense relationship with Lavender Brown.

On one occasion, Ron mimics Hermione's tendency to be overenthusiastic about answering questions in class, which makes her flee to the bathroom to cry. Harry chases after her and learns that Luna has been comforting Hermione.

Luna understands Hermione's feelings of embarrassment and is a supportive friend. As the books progress, the two become closer.

Luna Becomes A Wizarding Naturalist And Discovers New Creatures

The books don't say what happens to Luna after she graduates from Hogwarts, but J.K. Rowling filled in some of the details during a 2007 interview:

Luna became a very famous wizarding naturalist who discovered and classified many new species of animals (though, alas, she never did find a Crumple-Horned Snorkack and had, finally, to accept that her father might have made that one up).

Luna Invented The Lion Hat To Support Gryffindor And Made An Eagle Version For Ravenclaw

Luna wears a lion hat to support Gryffindor in their match against Slytherin in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The hat is enchanted to roar on command, and the roar is so loud that it startles everyone in the Great Hall when Luna demonstrates it.

Luna invents the hat herself, and also creates a Ravenclaw variant. This one is made in the image of an eagle that appears alive and flaps its wings in support of the house - she wears it for Ravenclaw's match against Gryffindor.

The Wizarding World Becomes Aware Of Voldemort's Return Because Of Luna

The Ministry conducts a smear campaign against Harry in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by using the Daily Prophet to publish libelous content about him. Harry finally finds a way to get the truth about Voldemort's return to the Wizarding World when Hermione forces Rita Skeeter to interview him.

Hermione gets Luna to convince her father, Xenophilous, to publish the interview in The Quibbler. Luna shows great courage because the entire Wizarding World was against anyone affiliated with Harry.

Her help allows the public to see Harry's side of what happened the night Voldemort returned, and many wizards end up switching allegiance to him.

Luna, Neville, And Ginny Become The New Leaders Of Dumbledore's Army

Luna becomes stronger and more mature by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, when she takes a leading role in the students' resistance against the Death Eaters at Hogwarts.

Luna, Neville, and Ginny restart Dumbledore's Army to prevent Voldemort's followers from corrupting students' minds. Luna leads by example when she teams up with Neville and Ginny to take the Sword of Gryffindor from Snape and send it to Harry.

The trio's defiance garners them many followers, but Luna is captured by the Death Eaters when they try to blackmail her father.

Luna's efforts aren't in vain, however, because Dumbledore's Army is prepared to fight by the time the Battle of Hogwarts begins.
