Mace Windu Fan Theories That Make You Want To Learn More About His Past

Mace Windu (to me) is one of the coolest Jedi in canon. Coming from a world with two warring factions as a baby he was trained to be a Jedi at the temple in Courscant. When he reached the age of becoming a padawan he was hand selected by the Jedi grand master himself Yoda.

Mace was strange though, he actually enjoyed fighting especially lightsaber combat and would revel in the challenge and besting of other Jedi in sparring. Yoda, believing this would lead Windu to close to the dark side, chose to train him in Form VII lightsaber combat, Windu developed Form VII into his own fighting style called Vaapad. Vaapad could draw on the dark side within either the user or opponent to increase the strength of the user.

Yoda saw that Mace now could channel that dark side energy into a more positive aspect and Mace became widely regarded as the best swordsman of the Jedi order (it's debatable that Anakin was a better swordsman but they were undoubtably the best two) this shows us that

1. Mace Windu did have to use the dark side and channel it through his lightsaber and

2. He used his lightsaber very often.

Here is my theory: Mace Windu originally had a blue saber and as he used Vaapad more and more his channeling of the darkside through his saber and crystal ended up bleeding the crystal purple. This could explain why purple blades were so rare because you had to use the dark side to bleed it while not actually falling to the dark side.

(The real world reason is because Samuel Jackson wanted a purple lightsaber but this could be a good in universe explanation.)

High in the Republic Executive Building Chancellor Palpatine, being confronted by Master Windu, begs for his life before Master Windu himself is disarmed, dis-handed, and Force lightninged out of a window careening hundreds of feet through traffic and towards the (presumably) hard coruscant ground.

I propose that under no circumstance could Master Windu have been killed by the act of Force lightning, being literally disarmed, falling from a great height, or a combination of all three. In fact no Jedi has ever died from any or all of those things. Therefore Jedi Master Mace Windu survived as well.

Losing a limb

Losing a limb in the Star Wars universe is almost expected. Many characters have, at some point, lost a limb to the energy of a lightsaber. How many have died? Let’s go over some major encounters.

• Anakin Skywalker, multiple times.

The first time Anakin lost a limb was on Geonosis in AotC to Count Dooku. After a minute or so of dueling Count Dooku got the better of Anakin and was able to cut off his right arm at slightly below the elbow . After such he is subsequently Force pushed several dozen feet and appears incapacitated, but obviously not dead. Then, arguably the greatest saber duel in all of Star Wars, Anakin Vs Obi-Wan Kenobi. Once again Anakin let his hubris get the best of him and he LOST HIS OTHER ARM AND BOTH LEGS.The man is out of limbs to lose and yet he still prevails. Granted he is “The Chosen One” so I guess technically as strong as he needs to be.

• Count Dooku

The tables have turned and once again Anakin and Dooku find themselves in a duel. This time it’s clear that Anakins powers have doubled since their last encounter. With grace only displayable by someone with the skills to be on The Council but the temperament to remain a knight he easily removes the hands of Dooku. It is only when Anakin relieves Dooku of his head privileges that he actually dies.

• Luke Skywalker

The first and only time Luke lost a limb was in The Empire Strikes Back on the planet Bespin in Cloud City.

After a lengthy battle over the cities central air shaft Vader proves that he’s still the best and cuts off Luke’s right hand. While Luke graps and clutches his wrist (or lack of) he screams in agony. He does not lose consciousness which is also evidence that losing a limb doesn’t cause death.

Now, Maul didn’t lose a limb. But he was bisected. At the waist. And survived. There are a lot of people who weren’t aware that he survived but he did indeed survive the whole thing.)• Anakin Skywalker

Force Lightning

There have been several instances where a character has been stuck by Force lightning. How many of them died or even suffered long lasting injuries?

Anakin, Luke, Yoda, Savage Opress, Ventress, Sister and Brother [Inquisitors], Ashoka, Maul, Mace Windu [have all been on the recieving end of Force lightning]. While Force lightning is excellent for momentarily incapacitating your opponent it’s not good for killing. It’s hardly good for even rendering unconscious.

But what about Darth Vader? Didn’t Force lightning kill him? No. The Force lightening malfunctioned his suit, which was life support.

There has never been an instance in which a Jedi or Sith has been killed by Force lightning.

Finally we have falling from great heights

There are a lot of instances in which a Jedi or Sith has fallen from a very great height and survived. Here are some samples:

• Anakin falling for 15 seconds then landing on a car going 90 degrees of him.

• Darth Maul falling for 10 while bisected and bouncing off of walls.

• Yoda falling for about 3 seconds and bouncing off of things.

• Luke falling [in Cloud City].

Now, this is where people usually say what about Palpatine? He was thrown to his death. That’s when I [note] it was the explosion from the core that killed him, not the impact. Now we’ve reached the conclusion. Due to the incredible resilience and fall damage of Jedi and Sith, there is no way that with the evidence in mind that Mace Windu is dead.

Mace Windu is a master Jedi. Which is not an easy accomplishment. I believe that he realized that he could not defeat both of them so he never came back.

If Mace Windu hadn't attacked the Chancellor in Revenge of the Sith, would Order 66 still have happened, or been effective?

Let's look at the facts here:

The Separatists were defeated by this point. Grievous was dead. Their army was in full retreat. The Jedi were still leading the clones. With Anakin on the side of the Jedi still, he would not have gone to the Temple to kill the younglings/weaker Jedi and in fact would have defended it against attack. Mace still would also have been there to defend the temple against the clones if they attacked. Obi-Wan and Yoda would have come back to Coruscant [too], adding to the previous point.

As Ashoka stated to Din, Grogu was somehow rescued from the Jedi Temple during Order 66 and then either had his Force abilities hidden (like Palpatine) or his mind somehow convinced he himself wasn't a Jedi/padawan.

My VERY UNLIKELY theory is that immediately after being flung from Palpatine's office window, Mace Windu (instantly realizing the whole Jedi Order/Republic had been hoodwinked) sped to the very vulnerable, easily corruptible, and immensely powerful Grogu. Mace knowing Yoda could handle himself or was already dead, and obviously the fact that Anakin (the other very vulnerable, easily corruptible, and immensely powerful one) was already turned, took it upon himself to take Grogu into hiding the same way Luke and Leia [eventually] were.

To add to this theory, I believe Mace/Grogu could have remained hidden the same way Palpatine did. I think it's been established that having your Force abilities masked is considered a Sith abilitiy. However out of all the Jedi, Mace had always straddled the line between Jedi and Sith in many ways. He clearly would have put two and two together on how Palpatine had been right under their noses the whole time. Essentially taking a play right out of Palpatine's playbook.

As the Jedi that ended Jango Fett's life in Attack of the Clones, Mace Windu unknowingly set his son Boba Fett down a path that followed in his father's footsteps, with one of his major goals being revenge against Master Windu as shown in The Clone Wars animated series. Fans have theorized that he could potentially pop up in The Book of Boba Fett due to both Samuel L. Jackson's interest in returning and the fact that we never actually see Mace Windu die on screen. Redditor u/throwawayoogaloorga points out:

...Of ALL characters to come back, Mace would be the one. Why? Because Samuel L Jackson said so. The only thing keeping him dead is the fear of becoming too fanservice-y, but lore-wise it makes more sense than Boba himself coming back. Darth Maul survived getting his entire lower torso (not just legs) removed through his connection to the Force; you'd think someone as powerful as Mace Windu would be able to do the same with only a missing hand... Mace Windu would ABSOLUTELY go into hiding. He'd probably be too weakened to do anything about it, which could lead to an encounter far more interesting than Boba getting killed, Boba isn't nearly as vengeful as Maul was, maybe he'd even take pity on him.

In Revenge of the Sith, after Anakin informs Mace about his suspicions on Palpatine and Mace says these words:

"If what you told me is true you will have gained my trust."

This confirms to Anakin that Mace doesn't trust him. How many other Jedi dont trust him? Anakin realizes the Jedi dont trust him and goes to save Palpatine ultimately becoming Darth Vader. If Mace said something else maybe, a simple thank you, [maybe] Anakin wouldn't have become Vader.
