Mary Elizabeth Winstead is an incredible actress who's managed to deliver nuanced, powerhouse performances in Oscar-worthy and blockbuster films alike. As one of the best up-and-comers in the industry, it's likely there's a lot about her that remains a total mystery to casual movie fans. Not only was she almost picked to be the Harley Quinn actress in Suicide Squad, she's also become something of a "scream queen" over the years, so odds are good you've seen her pop up in one of your favorite 2010s horror flicks.
Whether she's an actress you admire and are familiar with or you're just learning about her amazing body of work, there's a ton of riveting information to learn about Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
Like many talented actors, Winstead also happens to be an accomplished singer. She began her singing career in 2013 by starting the musical duo Got a Girl, accompanied by producer and collaborator Dan the Automator. As of 2018 they've released only one album, titled I Love You But I Must Drive Off This Cliff. She has also been a featured vocalist on Portugal. The Man and Deltron 3030 tracks.
One of her first on-screen singing appearances came in 2007's Death Proof. Without much warning or preparation, Quentin Tarantino asked her to sing an a capella cover of "Baby It's You." Her performance was so well-received it helped push her into a more musical direction, but she considers herself an actress first, singer second.
In an interview with RadioFree, she described her relationship to music, saying, "I wasn't ever really going to be a singer, but it's just something I've always loved."
Back in 2017, Winstead began dating Ewan McGregor, whom she met while filming the third season of Fargo. Shortly after their relationship went public, McGregor split from Eve Mavrakis, his wife of 22 years. They remained estranged until the actor filed for divorce in January of 2018.
Due to the timing of the split, the tabloids quickly pointed their collective fingers at Winstead as the cause. Whether Winstead helped spark McGregor's divorce or was merely the first woman he saw following his breakup is unclear, as none of the people involved have come out to discuss the situation.
Winstead's career spans numerous genres, but she seems particularly drawn to horror. She's making a name for herself as this generation's "scream queen," having starred in Final Destination 3, the 2006 Black Christmas remake, Death Proof, and 10 Cloverfield Lane.
When asked about her preference for various genre work in a Time Out interview, she said horror is "The No. 1 go-to genre for me. I don’t know why! It has been since I was a kid."
After years of development, DC is finally moving forward with a feature-film adaptation of Birds of Prey. While not much is known about the project, some casting information has leaked. Winstead has been cast in the role of The Huntress. This will be the first time the character has appeared on the big screen. Previously, she showed up on The CW's Arrow and in various animated series.
In an interview with The Wrap, Winstead discussed what attracted her to the role:
I can’t say that I was a huge comic book reader. But when I met with Cathy Yan, who’s directing the film, and learned kind of the back story of the character, I was really interested. It’s a really strong, kind of emotional place to start from for a superhero character. I won’t go into too much detail now, but I think it’s interesting and an opportunity to do something cool with this kind of character.
