The story of Miranda Barbour is a bizarre and multi-faceted. After murdering Troy LaFerrara on November 11, 2013, Barbour was brought in for the crime, but police got more than they were expecting when she began talking. Barbour's stories wove together mysterious satanic cults, a husband-wife murder duo, Craigslist, TV killers, and even an alter ego.
Discerning the truth is difficult, mostly because it is so difficult to tell fact from fiction. She may have only killed a few people, or it may have been dozens. She may have started killing as a teen, and may have a killer alter ego. Despite the confusion, the bare truths are enough to keep anyone from seeking companionship on Craigslist, since that was how Barbour tracked down some of her victims in the first place. We can just take comfort in the fact that she will probably be behind bars for the rest of her life.
Barbour Stabbed Tony LaFerrara At Least 20 Times After Her Husband Couldn't Do It
The murder that brought Barbour and her husband down was that of 42-year-old Troy LaFerrara. Barbour targeted LaFerrara using a craigslist ad, then, according to their claims, she and her husband prepared to commit the murder. They drove to a local mall, with Elytte hiding in a blanket in the backseat of the car, where he would wait for a signal from his wife before pouncing. When LaFerrara got into the car, Barbour supposedly said that she was just 16, but that LaFerrara hadn't seemed to care. Barbour then said "Did you see the stars tonight?" as a signal, but Elytte, reluctant to act, took a lot before going through with the plan. He began strangling LaFerrara, but was unable to finish the job, so Barbour proceeded to stab LaFerrara at least 20 times. Reports claim LaFerrara remained alive for some time after, even as they were preparing to dispose of the body. They then stole his wallet, dumped the body in an ally, and tried to clean out the car at a local Walmart.
To top off the evening, the pair then went to a strip club to celebrate Elytte's 22nd birthday. Interestingly enough, this also happened to be on the anniversary of Barbour's parents' divorce - an event she apparently never got over.
She Portrays Herself As A Real-Life "Dexter"
One facet of the case that grabbed people's attention was the fact that Barbour claimed she had only killed people who deserved it and had committed evil acts. Miranda claimed that she began killing in Alaska, and then it was only people who owed the cult money, but she soon began to branch out. She says she started hunting down people who had abused children, or had molested them. She would even pretend to be a pre-teen in chat rooms in order to lure out pedophiles. She also claimed only one of her numerous killings was in self defense. While she has said that she wishes she could get a new start, she hasn't apologized for killing these people.
All this lead to her being named a Dexter-style killer, after the hit TV show's conscientious killer. However, given the fact that her killings are not even confirmed, some media sources and specialists say this may just be a calculated attempt on her part to gain attention.
She Claims To Have Murdered Dozens, But No One Can Prove It
What is so curious about Barbour's crimes is that no one can really agree on the number of people she has killed. Since being imprisoned, she has claimed to have killed at least 22 people, and perhaps as many as 100. She recalls individual victims, mostly men, who she targeted online or in person, and then either stabbed to death or shot. She says her first kill was when she was just 13, and had been asked to kill someone who owed the satanic cult money.
Regardless of these claims, various state and county authorities have come forward on the record to say that they do not have any evidence there are missing people or unsolved murders to link to her claims, and that they do not believe she's killed all the people she alludes to.
Barbour's father also agrees with authorities. He says that his daughter is a liar, and that these stories are just a grab for attention, since Barbour is manipulative and narcissistic by nature. He says that these killings only exist in a fantasy world in her head, even if she is confirmed to have killed at least one man.
She Enlisted Her New Husband To Help Her
One particularly chilling aspect of the case is that Barbour had an accomplice, namely her new husband. She was in North Carolina when she met Elytte Barbour, and she took a shine to the slightly older man right away. She began to draw him into the satanism she'd become so attached to, and he followed willingly. In October of 2013, the two married, and it only took a few weeks for the pair to become murderous.
Elytte would later admit that his wife worked with him when picking the victim, killing him, and even disposing of the body. There is no doubt that she was the ringleader, but Elytte said that they were in it together, from the beginning until the end.
