February 18, 2020 17 items

The hot topic at spring training for the 2020 MLB season was obviously the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal, and in their first interviews of the new season, many popular baseball players took the chance to speak out against the cheating and bash Astros players for their seemingly disingenuous apologies.

Top stars in baseball like Mike Trout, Aaron Judge, and Clayton Kershaw all spoke about losing respect for Astros players amid the scandal, while pitchers like Alex Wood, Trevor Bauer, and Mike Clevinger all admitted they are likely to consider throwing at Astros hitters in retaliation for the tainted 2017 World Series title.

Braves outfielder Nick Markakis went so far as to say players on the Astros deserve a beating, while Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez went other way, suggesting that the angry player reactions were getting out of hand.

So, check out this list of MLB player reactions to the Astros cheating scandal, and check back as more players speak out about one of the biggest stories to rock the baseball world since steroids.

  • "It's sad for baseball. It's tough. They cheated. I don't agree with the punishments, the players not getting anything. It was a player-driven thing. It sucks, too, because guys' careers have been affected, a lot of people lost jobs. It was tough. Me going up to the plate knowing what was coming - it would be pretty fun up there."

"I just don't think [the Astros' 2017 title] holds any value with me. You cheated and you didn't earn it. It wasn't earned the way of playing the game right and fighting to the end. The biggest thing about competition is laying it all out on the line, and whoever's the better player, better person, comes out on top. And to know that another team had an advantage - nothing that you can really guard against - I just don't feel like that's earned."

"It's anger. I feel like every single guy over there needs a beating. It's wrong. They're messing with people's careers. ... There's right ways to do it and wrong ways to do it. I 100 percent disagree with the way they did it. There's a lot of people that were hurt by it, and it was wrong."

And then you get the owner up there saying some dumb stuff, and it's like, 'What's going on? How can you be that ignorant to the situation?'"
